petit uncommon?
« on: October 01, 2007, 11:01:01 AM »
Would you consider making the word "petit" common, GAGL? Even though, technically, it is a "foreign" word, it's so much used in the public, one may not notice!

There is a class of crimes defined as "petit" and here, courts and juries are also called "petit", so perhaps it is more common than rare. Esp. given how many "petty" crimes are committed around the world, and thereby, "petit" courts and juries are employed to resolve them.

I'm not persuaded, Threeb.

I hadn't heard of the phrase "petit jury", but I gather it refers to an ordinary jury that tries a case, as opposed to a grand jury. Since we don't have grand juries in Australia - or Britain as far as I know - it's not surprising that we don't need the phrase "petit jury". I don't believe we use "petit court" or "petit crime" either, although we do use the expression "petty crime".

I can't comment on how widely-used petit is in the US, but I think it's definitely in the rare camp elsewhere. So, as discussed in earlier topics, it's not appropriate as a Chi common word.

Besides, this is one case where the feminine version of a word gets more recognition: petite is classed as common.

A 'long slow comfortable screw' for me please...
Or 'sex on the beach'  or several 'orgasms' would be nice....
I really don't mind one of each either...i can mix my drinks.
If you can throw in a 'tom' or 'john' collins all the better....
