arche

The all-encompassing Mr Webster does include the following without italics, although it is certainly getting into the technical vocabulary of philosophy in a big way (but hey, doesn't that make a nice change from chemistry  ;D?).

Main Entry: ar·che
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural ar·chai \-kimacr\

: something that was in the beginning : a first principle: a in early Greek philosophy : a substance or primal element b in Aristotle : an actuating principle (as a cause)

"arche." Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged. Merriam-Webster, 2002. http://unabridged.merriam-webster.com (23 Sep. 2007).

My feeling is that it's too archaic. Also foreign and too technical.

Otherwise, it's a good suggestion.

I was trying to break it to him gently.

Did you ever watch the film Capricorn One?
There was a joke in there about breaking news gently....

OH! and...
I'm not convinced Dave is 'the break it to me gently' type....
If he was asked if he wanted 'the good news or the bad news first', i think he would opt for the bad news....anything after that is a bonus....
That's the way i would i would go...

Quite right, T., I think I prefer the bad news upfront!

Can't help but admire Alan's subtlety.  Do I detect a note of "for chrissake stop wasting my time with these ridiculously optimistic suggestions, you dumb bastard," perchance? ;D
