octene
« on: August 31, 2007, 07:01:44 PM »
It might be too technical again, but this is a pretty standard chemical word for one of the aliphatic hydrocarbons... please, Sir?

(A man needs some encouragement when he has been staring for some considerable time at the challenge puzzle with no idea about that bloody nine-letter word!)

Cheers,

Dave

I am gloriously haglike as usual!  Sitting in waiting for scaffolders to return .... hubby doing 'manly' things around the house and son sat in his pyjamas watching Kerrang!  Washing is blowing merrily in the breeze (I say breeze, I mean gale!) and all is fine ... it's Friday, how could it not be?!  >:D

I hope they don't fall off the scaffolding???
You may have to do emergency first aid...and do you know what often happens to men who suffer from back injuries?

"Pretty standard", Dave? Well, I would say so! The word octene is seldom off my lips when I'm talking aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Actually, the word is verging on being "too technical", but according to dictionary.com, it's in Webster's Unabridged, so it just scrapes in.

And, just to be helpful, here is the entry ;D.

Straight-chain, of course, is more correctly termed aliphatic.  Isn't knowledge wonderful?!

Main Entry: oc·tene
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): -s
Etymology: International Scientific Vocabulary octa- + -ene
: any of the four oily liquid straight-chain octylenes

Citation format for this entry:

"octene." Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged. Merriam-Webster, 2002. http://unabridged.merriam-webster.com (3 Sep. 2007).
