rogue_mother whinges -- a big NOOGIE for GAGL
« on: August 09, 2007, 11:56:22 PM »
I think I am resigned to the fact that there is a heavy British and Australian bias in the word list.  "Whinge" and "whinged" as *common* words earlier this week are clear evidence.  How about one for us Colonials?  I would like to suggest "noogie," a little easier to find documentation for than my previous suggestion, as noogies are widely known here on the North American continent.  Also known as a Dutch rub, a noogie is when someone grabs you in a head lock and vigorously rubs his knuckles on the top of your head.

Oh, R-M -- I LOVE that word and am VERY familiar with it, and with its application. Our family has a long-standing tradition of giving noogies!! Which are, of course, somewhat akin to the more aggressive, strictly male-adolescents' favorite, the WEDGIE, which is accepted!

GAGL cannot refuse this one (I hope!)! I'm still panting about PANTO!! Thanks for the US support!!

WHY?? Isn't that your favorite topic (re: thong, drawers ... aren't YOU the one usually bringing those up, if my admittedly poor memory recalls?)?? Don't tell me you have higher aspirations now!  >:D

I would much rather be taking them down...or not having them on at all...in fact if Roy had still been here...but let's not go there....it makes me melancholy and frustrated, to say the least...

Drop the subject threeb....but make sure no-one but your hubby is watching!!!

Yes, dear!!! This time, I'll behave, esp. since I really didn't know it would cause you any grief! I've been duly chastised, and with good reason.

Hello, T,

do people give noogies in the motherland?

Yes, apparently, we do, R_M....i have just asked my 2 urchins and they have confirmed that they do indeed give 'nuggies' to each other, especially[or only] when i am not looking.
Another couple of slaps and fingers slammed in the door should sort that one out...!!!

Ouch!

All right, all right, you've made your point, Rogue_mother.

Noogie is in some dictionaries, so it should be allowed. Random House defines it as:

Quote
a light blow or jab, usually to a person's head, back, or upper arm and accompanied by a twisting motion, with the extended knuckle of the curled-up second or third finger: done as a gesture of affection or painfully as a prank.

While Webster's New Millennium Dictionary says:

Quote
an aggressive poke or rub with the knuckles on another's head (etc.) as a gesture of affection or annoyance

Its alternate forms nugie and nuggie will be added to our list as well.
