Decloak

I was somewhat dismayed that "decloak" was rejected by Chi.  Come on, Alan, even Klingons know what decloaking is!

RM, I think the weakness in your argument is that we are not Klingons. Is the word decloak used outside the context of Star Trek? I can't find it in any dictionary.

And, T, I can't follow your logic at all.

Well, I just don't want it to become a regular habit, but appreciate the support, Anonsi!

I have to admit that "decloak" doesn't seem to be in any dictionaries.  You could be ahead of the curve on this one, though, because someday soon it will be.  A Google search of "decloak" returns mostly Star Trek related sites or gamer sites that use the term in a similar manner as in Star Trek, but interspersed among them are a lot of sites using the term that are neither.  As usage increases, dictionaries will be force to acknowledge it.  If you search on "cloaking device," you find that there is a lot of research going on to produce such an item, and once that is successful, decloaking will be part of the common parlance.

You're a woman ahead of her time, R-M. If you can imagine it, someday, it will come to pass!

Besides, "decloak" is known and understood by more people that such approved words as "ottar," "rort," and "troat," just to name a few from yesterday's standard puzzle.

Fascinating stuff, RM. Thanks for drawing our attention to that intriguing research. But as for the word, I'm not convinced it qualifies for our list. It may do so one day, but it doesn't now seem to have a strong enough place in the language.

It's true that some of the words we do allow are known to very few people nowadays, but they're still part of the English language, and can still be encountered in old books and poetry. Newly emerging words present more of a challenge, because their future status is necessarily a matter of speculation. Occasionally we admit a word that hasn't yet made it into the dictionaries, if there's clear evidence of its usage, but I don't see that yet in the case of decloak.

You might not be VIRAL, but i am...and it's the Vulcans and Spock who do the sensible logic...not us Klingons...so i'm not surprised you didn't get it...
Can't i just second a word just because i want to...???
