Peccary in yesterday’s ten letter challenge
« on: January 13, 2024, 09:27:13 PM »
Ok so 34 from 250 odd players found PECCARY - a common word apparently- which I did not. It’s pretty uncommon in my view. What do others think? I’d hate to ask Alan to review its status if you all thought it was common.

I knew it was a breed of pig -  but that didn't mean that I was on of the few who got it! Not common.

Although it was one of the first words I found, not sure it is truly common.

I got it, but didn’t think it would be commonly known.

( The other animal that I am surprised is classed as rare in Chi is the meerkat. I realise this is changing the subject of the thread. Is that considered naughty? )

I don’t think it’s naughty. Live a little! Meerkat seems common to me and peccary not common. Swap them over perhaps?

My vote would be for both words to be common. (Even thought I've never actually played either of them 😆.)

Well with those responses it seems like more think peccary is not a commonly known word. In my household no one had heard of it. Obviously now I have and fantastic to increase my vocab however can I ask you to review the status of peccary please Alan when you get time. Thank you.

Well, I didn't play peccary myself, so that naturally predisposes me to class it as rare. Had I heard of the word? I think so, but I wasn't sure what it means.

The word appears fairly infrequently in publications and websites - 0.01 times per million in the News on the Web corpus and 0.02 times per million in the Corpus of Global Web-Based English. This is certainly a lot less often than meerkat. I feel that it ought to be in the rare category, so I'll change both peccary and peccaries to rare.

Wibbly Bits, if changing the subject is naughty, then all the regular forum contributors should be standing in the corner. As it happens, the rare status of meerkat was queried in 2021 by Morbius. I haven't yet responded to that, but I will soon.
