Daily Puzzle 14 May 2023 - SPOILER ALERT!
« on: May 14, 2023, 10:27:46 PM »
Hi Alan,

In today's Daily Puzzle, I put in the word 'gallow' which came up as a rare word = fair enough. I put in 'gallows' which came up as unknown. Yes, it is adding a simple 's' to the word but it is a 'gallows', used as a single word where people are hung or other stuff is hung up. I believe there is a case for adding 'gallows' as a common.

Thanks,

Rhino

I completely agree with rhino. "Gallows" is a plural noun usually treated as a singular; the same is true of "measles," a word that came up in yesterday's puzzle as a common word.

Yes the only possible justification for excluding it would be that it is the 3rd person singular of the archaic verb "to gallow" but by the same token "pants" would be excluded as the 3 person singular of the decidedly nin-archaic "to pant".

Hang on!

I tried it too and was very surprised it wasn't allowed.

Same here. I was planning on bringing it up after the puzzle closed.
