INGROUND in yesterdays ten letter REBOUNDING game
« on: May 09, 2023, 09:12:43 AM »
Tried INGROUND (as in swimming pool) but not known. In Australia we have above ground or INGROUND swimming pools.
Is this only known here? Like the word ensuite written as one word, which is also not accepted.
Being in real estate both are words we use frequently in advertising.
Alan, you’ve already explained ensuite is more widely known overseas as en suite, but what about INGROUND? Should it be added as a word?

I tried it too.  It's in a few dictionaries (Collins, Britannica Dictionary, Wiktionary, The Free Dictionary) so it's definitely a valid word.

Just to correct one point: ensuite is allowed, as a rare word.

Inground is another word that's often written as a hyphenated compound. Still, the single-word version is in some dictionaries, as Morbius notes. It will be allowed in future, as a rare word. Rare, partly because the hyphenated form seems to be used quite a bit more often, and also because the word, however written, is not used much in Britain and Ireland, presumably for climatic reasons.
