Stopped in -fill deep holes

Filling in - filling in shallow holes

Uni-bond is a pva and water mix that seals new plaster, cement, etc

Miss coat - is a watered down emulsion paint mix [usually all the bits left in the bottom of paint tins mixed together...] this seals the walls further before painting properly..

Thanks, T - didn't know those terms.  My knowledge of such things is pretty basic:  spackling to fill in the holes, primer as a first coat (not that my landlord would ever worry about such things), and then painting.

UPDATE....

The walls have all now had at least 2 coats of paint...although they need 3...

New lights are up, after much cussing and swearing..

All the glossing is done..

The new light switch is on, after much cussing and swearing....

Most of the old carpet is up.....

New carpet for the stairs and landing is on it's way.

Laminate flooring for the hallway is on it's way...

....and i am so pi**ed off with it all now i could happily just walk away from it and live in a tent....

One more week, and hopefully it will be nearly done.....

I think that is the 'top coat' of paint, the one which is the icing on the cake sort of thing.
All the work is in the preparation.Wash down with sugar soap, rub down with various grades of sandpaper, filler for any cracks, then undercoat of a good quality, and then the final gloss.
A bit like when most of us kick-start the day in the bathroom. :-P

Oh - I thought it might mean painting the woodwork with a glossy paint while the walls were semigloss or matte.

It does, birdy. I think SG missed the word 'gloss' out of his first sentence.

Good point Pat! But the word 'that' could have two roles, hence the ambiguity.

Firstly the 'that' could be relative to the word 'gloss' in the previous posting. So, to the question 'What is gloss paint?', I could reply 'That is the top-coat in the painting process.

Secondly, for me to have missed a word out, (a frequent aberration on my part), then the clauses would be
'I think' = Main Clause
'that (it) is the top coat of paint' would be the Subordinate Clause.('it' would have been better)

So, Pat, to have been accurate and precise, I should have written "I think that gloss is the top coat of paint". :)

Actually, SG, that wouldn't have been entirely helpful either as it uses the definite rather than the indefinite article. Although gloss is a top coat of paint, it's only one of several types of top coats, silk and matt being two others that come to mind. Having said that, I'm sure we all know what gloss paint is, Linda and I to our cost, as mentioned in the cricket thread!

Oh what fun to get so pedantic on a Sunday morning!

I always used to use gloss but I'm more of a silk person now.

Pedantic? You Pat? Never!
Always valid points.
But maybe it is a good thing that we on Lex never meet up for committee meetings.
'Point of Order Chair' would be our battlecry!

Oh My GOD..... :o

What are you like you 2...........???

Gloss is the final coat of paint, with the whole process having been [and should always be, when using brand new wood]...
Knot..
Prime..
Stop in....
Undercoat...
Light sanding
Gloss [or top coat]

The final coat does not need to be a gloss, and this is the first time in ages i've used it...

I have now removed all the old carpets..

Touched up all the paint work where necessary...

Filled in all the gaps up the very old staircase...

Cleaned..
Cleaned..
Vacuumed...
Cleaned.....

Did i mention i put a levelling screed on the hallway floor?

OH!  and i cleaned.....

On the last leg now......
