I don't know why I should get dragged into this discussion of questionable hats.

Alan, that's a much nicer pic than your bookworm pic! Actually, you look like a much younger John Voight!

Hello folks....

I am a very sad woman [i know what you are thinking-'we already knew that!!']

Well stop it,,,this is serious.

My house has been invaded by builders...putting in a damp course...and it is wrecked.
Therefore i am not living there at the moment...so have no access to a computer once i have left work..

So you see..i have very little time to spend on here and catch up on the Chi news and views...and play the game of course...

So you all take care and i will pop in when i can...

Byeee...missing you already.. XX
I am missing it dreadfully....and it may be weeks before normal service resumes....

Yes, hope all goes well and the damp-course does its job!

I wonder what special precautions are taken in Venice?

Any Venetian bricklayers on Chi????? ???

Damp Course Update....

Plaster has come off...
Damp course duly injected..
Render has been applied, and is awaiting drying out...

Dust still remains, and is settling in nicely all over the house..including the inside of cupboards and wardrobes [despite all doors being closed]   * me wonders if that dust was there already!!??!!??

We can now plant next springs cabbages in the dust.....

New carpet has been ordered for the lounge....
Laminate has been ordered for the hallway...

...and that's it so far....

Further updates will follow- time permitting....

Surely not!   :-P

You may need to borrow a hound to chase the dust bunnies, though.

Ok, I am not a builder, so feel free to add to or correct me.

Firstly, a damp course is not a FLOOD DEFENCE!!

What it is in fact is a non-permeable membrane in your brick wall usually about a 20cms above the ground level. It can be a sort of rubber sheet put in when the wall is being built or in older houses it is injected into the wall horizontally between the bricks, where the cement is I think.

The reason for the damp course is that the brickwork is capable of drawing moisture up from below the ground in a 'capillary action' which is rather like blotting paper.(you do remember blotting paper, do you not ???) So, the moisture is drawn up the brickwork, hits the dpc (wow, we are talking like real builders already ???) and saves your house from having walls like those in a sauna!

dpc = damp-proof course. ;D

I had rising damp in my lounge and hallway. coming up through the cavities in the walls..

The latest is - bitumen paint is now all over the render....awaiting plastering....

It's getting there...

Thanks Anonsi..miss you too..

Birdy....i may just let the girls out to dust...
