Thursday 29 September 7-by-many COHERENCY puzzle
« on: September 30, 2022, 05:40:42 PM »
CHYRON - a caption superimposed over (usually the lower part of) a video image (as often seen on news and current affairs broadcasts) – we see them all the time!!! https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/chyron
The greenest watt ever produced is the one you never use. Playing as jk1956 & John is my name.
When we come out of the Covid-19 crisis, we need to make sure recovery efforts address the Climate Crisis (which can't be solved using social distancing!)

I was going to suggest this one myself. I believe Chyron is the name of the company whose software enabled these graphics, but just like Kleenex/kleenex, Google/google it's become a generic term. It's certainly in my dictionary with a lower case 'c'.

This is a word that had somehow not come to my attention previously. But it's a real word all right. And according to the News on the Web corpus, one that's been used much more often in the past three years. A very recent example is from a Yahoo! News item, sourced from Huffpost:

Quote
After Truss delivered her resignation in a crisp address Thursday, the Daily Star lowered a crown atop the seven-day-old lettuce and, as the national anthem played, placed the Truss portrait face-down.

Disco lights, party music and empty bottles of booze soon followed, as the chyron declared, “This lettuce outlasted Liz Truss.”

I'll add it as a rare word.

It seems that people in the UK have been making a lot of lettuce gags - that one is just the tip of the iceberg.
