Friday 16 September 10-letter PLAYGROUND puzzle

RAYGUN – surely a word??? The dictionaries seem to spell it as two words or hyphenated but I can distinctly remember having got one for xmas as a child and I’m sure it was a single word… https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/raygun

Yes, ray gun is the usual spelling, but as your link shows, Wiktionary recognises the single word form as a variant. And it is sometimes written that way. Of the fourteen citations given in the online Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction, three write raygun, three ray-gun and the rest use ray gun. (The first known usage was in 1917.)

I'll add raygun as a rare word. But please use it responsibly.
