Yesterday's ten letter OUTCLASSED game
« on: August 18, 2022, 08:29:53 PM »
So I missed DUCTLESS and CASTLED. I truly find it amazing that either would be classed as common. It’s not just sour grapes, it’s more that I can’t imagine using them in day to day life and indeed unless Ductless is some sort of commonly used technical term known the world over, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of either of them. Maybe a ductless vacuum system, but no, on reflection, it’s called a ducted system.
So I would like Alan to please reassess their status. Thank you.

I don’t play chess myself but castled is a very common move for those that do.

CHESS
(of the king) moved from its original square two squares along the back rank toward the corner square of a rook, which has been transferred to the square passed over by the king.
"an attack against a castled king is a very important part of the middle game"
Regards, Jack

Ah, thanks for that - when I pressed on the meaning it talked about having lots of castles. Not really a thing these days! But a chess move would account for its common status.

Some dictionaries tell us that ductless can be used of a gland that secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream. However, the vast majority of usage instances I found were describing air conditioning systems that blow cooled or heated air directly into a room, rather than piping it around the house. While the meaning is fairly obvious when you see the word, lots of us may never have done so. I suspect most people who have air conditioners in their homes would not have thought of them as 'ductless'.

The word will be treated as rare from now on.
