SPOILER: Word suggestion for Challenge puzzle 8 August
« on: August 08, 2022, 10:07:33 AM »
I tried bodhi (the state of enlightenment in Buddhism) unsuccessfully in the recent ********* game.  It's listed (without a capital B) in various dictionaries including Merriam-Webster, Collins and dictionary.com, as well as in numerous reference works on Buddhism and religion in general.

Could you please edit your post to removed the 9-letter word since the game is still alive?

Tacking on an additional spoiler BUT for August 8 7BM puzzle….

A word I know as of today, thanks to being a consistently sloppy typist. Honestly.

DYDOE

It is featured on wiktionary in full color in situ.

Should more academically substantial research than The Wik upholds its legitimate usage

Let's look at bodhi first. It's absent from quite a few dictionaries, but it is in some. It's not so easy finding actual usage examples where the word is written without a capital B. The first one I spotted, from the UK Evening Standard of 5 August, was a not especially reverent par about the Little bodhi Microfibre Travel Towel, available from Amazon for £8.99. However, there are some Buddhist-related examples around too.

I'll add bodhi as a rare word.

Lilys field suggested dydoe, a type of male genital piercing. As noted, there is a photo accompanying the Wiktionary entry. There's also a lavishly illustrated article in Wikipedia.

I couldn't find it in any other dictionary, although Collins lists it as a new word suggestion, made in 2013 but still pending investigation.

It seems to be a genuine word, albeit specialized. Its origin is uncertain: Wikipedia suggests a variation of doodad. Wikipedia has references to a few books and magazines dealing with the topic. The earliest published use of the word that I could find was in a 1989 book, Modern Primitives: An Investigation of Contemporary Adornment and Ritual, by V. Vale and Andrea Juno.

I'll add it as a rare word.

Not being familiar with the word dydoe I did the obvious thing and googled it. I guess my investigation went a bit too far as I came across a truly awful video that actually had nothing to do with the word. And now I can't unsee it!
