Thursday 4 August 7-by-many SHAMBLE puzzle
« on: August 05, 2022, 02:31:56 PM »
First off, my most humble apologies to Alan, who doesn’t deserve this list of “lesses” and “ables” – for each of these I have provided a reference, either dictionary or Wiktionary to support their inclusion. I have indicated using italics those that I consider may be excluded because they may be over-technical and hence unknown to the average well-read player.

SMASHABLE – capable of being smashed https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/smashable potential seed word
MASHABLE - Of a consistency suitable for mashing; (internet informal) Suitable for inclusion in a mashup* (*which may also not be in the Chi lexicon) https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/mashable potential seed word
HEMLESS – without a hem https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hemless
MESHABLE – capable of being meshed or converted to a mesh https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/meshable potential seed word
MESHLESS – a numerical method for overcoming many of the limitations of the finite element method (mathematical term) https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/nme.798

LASHLESS – without eyelashes https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lashless
HASHABLE – computer/cryptographic term defined as if it has a hash value that remains the same during its lifetime https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hashable
SMELLABLE – capable of being smelled https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/smellable
EMBALMABLE – suitable to be embalmed https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/embalmable
LABELLESS – without a label https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/labelless
SLASHABLE – able to be slashed https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/slashable
BALMLESS – without balm https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/balmless
LABELLABLE – able to be labelled (US. labelable is allowable as rare) https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/labellable
BESMALL – similar to belittle; make small https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/besmall
I was going to add SMALLS but it’s already been dealt with here https://theforum.lexigame.com/index.php?topic=690.msg16591#msg16591

P.S. I have checked each and every one of these and they have not been previously submitted…

Again, my most humble apologies… 🙏🙏🙏

There must be a psychological term to describe someone who profusely apologizes to someone for what he is about to do and then goes ahead and does it anyway!

Seriously, RTT, is it really so important to you that all these words be accepted that you need to inundate poor Alan?

No, it's not so important to me but, looked at another way, I have saved others from having to suggest these as, can be seen, they all have at least some modicum of legitimacy, as shown by the references... I would be surprised if these all hadn't been tried by at some other player.

I am more than happy for Alan to give a yay/nay judgement without having to go into any detail as per his usual adjudications.

RTT gave me advance warning that he had drawn up a big list of word suggestions from that puzzle. I could have asked him not to post them, but I actually tried a few of them myself, so I think they're worth considering...eventually.

I too have wanted Alan to be spared from an avalanche of outer fringe suggestions. However,  we all have  encountered his finely honed wit tempered by his good nature. He’s quite able to fend

On a personal note, I find RTTs suggestions to be annoying yet easily ignored. I believe them to arise , also, from an impish good humor. It’s hard to figure out who is the straight man in this duo. They both seem to be having fun.

I'm adding smashable, smellable and lashless, which are all in Merriam-Webster, as rare words. And I'm adding labellable as a rare word, since the spelling labelable is already accepted and the double-L variant is listed in the Collins dictionary.

The other words I decline to add. Meshless may not be in any general dictionary; the others seem to be in Wiktionary only, and Wiktionary has a very broad policy on inclusion of words which can result in it listing nonce words or other very obscure coinages. It may be that some of these words are used often enough that they ought to be in our list, but I'd need to be convinced.

Hemless is one I tried (and have tried other times). It might not be in dictionaries? but comes up often in descriptions of clothing etc. For example https://www.braandcorsetsupplies.com/2018/07/15/make-hemless-boyshorts/

I’d even say it was common!

I hope you find the example useful
