Sunday 15 May 7-by-many GOOSEBERRIES puzzle
« on: May 17, 2022, 01:51:40 PM »
Sorry Alan, quite a bunch of suggestions to go through today…

BIOSES – these are a necessary part of any computer… (Basic Input Output System) Yes, it’s generally (but not always) capitalised; yes, it’s an acronym and yes, it’s technical but it’s also fairly commonly known…

SINOD – [middle English] an ecclesiastical gathering, esp. a meeting of bishops; a church council

REGOES – goes again (self-evident)…

SOSSOS – a quantity of 60 (check the meaning of sosses [rare] in the puzzle which is where I found this)…

BOOBIES – plural form of booby being a large tropical seabird of the gannet family or a stupid person or, dare I say it, an informal term for breasts… (so, yes, I do dare!  :-P)

Is it just me or has Alan taken a hiatus on responding to word suggestions? Maybe it’s a coincidence or maybe I’m imagining it, but he seemed to respond more often before RTT’s myriad of suggestions.
Are you ok Alan?

I'm fine, Jacki. Thanks for asking. I'm fine perhaps because I haven't been looking at the outstanding word suggestions much. When I do look at them I get depressed about how many there are. That's not all down to RTT. There was a big backlog before.

There are probably a few options for dealing with this situation, but one of them is to ignore it, and that's what I've been mostly doing for the last few weeks. It seems to be working.

You poor thing! How about a hiatus on new word suggestions unless ten or more people agree with the suggestion? Then you can look at it. Just an idea.

I'd second that, although I would think five in agreement would be sufficient to warrant submission.

Regarding bioses, bios (and by implication its plural) has been suggested several times. I rejected it in 2007 on the grounds of capitalisation, and then reviewed the situation in 2017 and rejected it again. If somebody cares to suggest it again in 2027 I might have another look at it.

Regarding sinod, as you note, RTT, it's a Middle English spelling of synod. Try submitting it to Ye Olde Worde Pussell website.

You say regoes is self-evident. Maybe, but has anybody ever said or written that word, I wonder. I've vowed to respond to these suggestions speedily, and not waste time on investigations that won't actually change the conclusion. Nevertheless I did try to find a usage example for regoes, without success.

Our word list already includes rego, but that's presumably for the informal term for a car registration (pronounced "rejjo"). This is mainly used in Australia and New Zealand, but it's in a few dictionaries. We also have the alternate spelling reggo.

Rego, meaning "To go back (to); to go again", is in the OED. I'll add as rare words regoes, regoing and rewent.

Regarding boobies, it's currently excluded as the plural of boobie, an alternate spelling of booby in the breast sense.

I'll leave it as a pending suggestion, in case I'm ever moved to deal with such issues again.

And finally we come to sossos, the transliteration of a word from ancient Greek, derived from a term used in the Babylonian Empire for the number 60, or perhaps for a time period equal to 60 years, or both.

Short answer: no way.

Slightly longer answer: The only dictionary I could find this word in is Wiktionary. It's not even in the full OED. When I agreed a while back, with some reluctance, to accept any word that was listed in a dictionary, I did note that I would reserve the right to use some discretion in relying on the authority of Wiktionary. One reason for my reservations is that Wiktionary aims to include any word used "in permanently recorded media, conveying meaning, in at least three independent instances spanning at least a year". As I said, this rule could admit to Wiktionary a vast number of specialist terms, jargon, regionalisms, slang, etc.

I'm not convinced that sossos has become part of the English language at all. And please note that consistency would suggest that we also accept the Babylonian terms for 600 years, neros, and 3,600 years, saros. And of course we'd need to embrace their plurals, sossoi, neroi and saroi. I found a work in Google Book Search that gave the plurals as sossi, neri and sari, so perhaps we would wish to include those variants as well.

Would adding all these words improve Chihuahua? I think not, with apologies to any Babylonians who may be reading this.

Thanks for your very considered responses again, Alan. I've got to say you've had me chuckling considerably even if the Babylonians amongst us will be less than happy...  ;D ;D ;D

I've got to say I hadn't heard of sossos before either and wouldn't have considered adding it as a suggestion except for the fact that I checked the meaning of sosses [rare] in the puzzle which is where I found this…  :-R :-R :-R

BTW. Alan, you're not suggesting removing the common word sari, are you??? Rhetorical question (I'm kidding, of course...)  ;) ;) ;)
