When I fire up the laptop after my sleep, remind me to tell you about the frightening undertaking that was Project Pluto. That one would have been really scary if it had been taken to completion.

Googling said project brings up a Wiki about it - truly disturbing what some people consider to be a good use of resources... N.B. In 2020 $, the amount spent was close to US$1.7B!!!  :-P :-P :-P

Back in the 1950s, the USA blew a cool $262 million on that project, at a time when that money would have paid for two aircraft carriers for the navy ...

...or quite a bit of education/healthcare...

I wrote an account of the scary nature of that project elsewhere. Enjoy reading that here ...

I agree that tritium is quite a technical term, known to some of us science nerds, but unknown to many others. If fusion power ever becomes a reality, tritium and deuterium may become more widely known - but then again maybe not. More to the point, I've been reading about the possibility of fusion power for 50 or 60 years, and it always seems to be at least 30 years away from viability. For example, this from the opening paragraph of an article published a couple of days ago: "...the stark reality is that practical fusion-based electric power remains a distant prospect. It is likely unachievable anytime in the next half a century."

Both tritium and deuterium will be treated as rare words from now on.
