Wednesday 12 January 7-by-many GOVERNESS/ES puzzle
« on: January 13, 2022, 04:26:45 PM »
REGEN – abbreviation for regenerative braking – a term well known to those following electric vehicles. Effectively, this allows you to refill your tank when slowing down – try THAT in an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine)!!!
See the “People also ask” section below:

VOGON – this one MUST be allowed!!! If not, I’m going to launch into Vogon poetry… 😉😉😉 https://hitchhikers.fandom.com/wiki/Vogon_poetry (yeah, yeah, I get it, it’s got a capital ‘V’) For your benefit, Alan, this one was tongue-in-cheek!!!

Seriously,

REORG – how many times has your department gone through one of these???

OVEREGG – something you should never do to the pudding…

When we come out of the Covid-19 crisis, we need to make sure recovery efforts address the Climate Crisis (which can't be solved using social distancing!)

The only dictionary currently listing regen is Wiktionary, as far as I can see. But it makes up for the others by giving several meanings, including an informal term for regeneration and to regenerate, as well as regenerative braking.

Looking at usage patterns, it seems the word has been used quite often in the last few years, mainly for regenerative braking. A recent example is from Autocar magazine in New Zealand a few days ago:

Quote
When you’re driving around in Eco, the paddles act as brake regen settings of which there are three, along with a coast mode.

The word is occasionally used as a verb. For example on the Driving website from Canada in October 2021:

Quote
The system is smart, as it looks at navigation data and other sensors to determine what’s happening — close in on a slower-moving vehicle and the system automatically begins to regen to reduce speed.

I'll add regen, regenning and regenned as rare words.

Reorg is sometimes written with a hyphen, but often without. It's in Wiktionary and some of the Oxford dictionaries as a noun, informal for reorganization. The New Oxford American Dictionary has it also as a verb, for reorganize. An example of its use as a verb was on the Entrepreneur website in January 2022:

Quote
For example, when I was reorged into a new team, I wasn't feeling great about where I landed.

I'll add reorg, reorging and reorged as rare words.

I much preferred the Vorlon (B5) to the Vogon. Even the Vorgon (STNG) were more interesting than the Vogon, IMO.

Oh freddled gruntbuggly
Thy micturations are to me
As pleddled gabbleblotchits
Upon a lurgid bee

Groop I implore thee
My foonting turlingdromes
And hooptiously drangle me
With crinkly bindlewurdles
Or else I will rend thee in the gobberwarts
With my bluglecruncheon, see if I don't!
Remember: if the world's bees disappear, we become extinct with them ...

Can’t claim to understand that, but it is impressive.
Lear, Milligan, Carroll or closer to home?
