Word suggestion MANSPLAIN
« on: October 15, 2021, 03:36:48 PM »
In yesterday's PLAINSMAN 7-by-Many, MANSPLAIN was 'Sorry, not known'.

I won't womansplain what it means – it's obvious  :D My browser underlines womansplain in red, but not mansplain. I think mansplain has made it into several dictionaries, and I'd like to suggest its inclusion as a rare word.

My thoughts exactly...

Thursday 14 October 7-by-many PLAINSMAN puzzle
MANSPLAIN – now, surely, I don’t have to explain this one…

Well I didn’t know what it meant so I looked it up and I can certainly say I’ve been on the end of it a few times!
When our relatively new Skoda (3 years old) stopped dead in its tracks, I asked the young fellow at the dealership what was wrong, and rather than tell me it was a world wide problem with the mechatronic in the engine, he said “It’s complicated.”
Fortunately the female manager at head office was more forthcoming and filled me in, got us a hire care for the six weeks it took to fix and had a word to the local dealership!

I tried MANSPLAIN too. However I failed to find PLAINSMAN. I didn't know that word, so I didn't feel so bad about that.

However, the other word I missed out on was "SALAMI" which for someone living in Hungary is pretty much unforgivable!

Yes, mansplain is in several dictionaries now. According to the OED, the first known use of the word was in an online post in 2008 by a user called phosfate, identified by Wiktionary as an Ann Larimer:

Quote
Oh, gosh, thank you so much for mansplaining this to us!

I'll add mansplain, mansplaining and mansplained, all as rare words.

Thanks for that, John! 😂
One time I pointed out some mansplaining and got a very huffy response that I was sexist 😂
