aircon
« on: September 22, 2021, 10:23:40 AM »
Does anyone else know or use the word aircon as an abbreviation for air-conditioning?
It's not part of Chi's lexicon, and COD has only AC /ac as short forms.

I know from experience, however. that the word is in common usage among English speakers in hot countries and Google Ngram viewer will testify to its popularity. Maybe it is hyphenated, but I will still suggest it as an addition to Chi's vocab list.

After all, if situation comedy can become sitcom, why not aircon?

In our household we’ve shortened it even further, as is so often the Australian way, so we say ac (pronounced ACK).
I think making aircon a common or rare word would be fine.

The Thai word for 'air-conditioner' sounds something like 'kreuangprapakaat'.
They usually just call it 'air'!

...but "air" isn't 4 letters or more...  ;)

Aircon is listed by Wiktionary, which labels it as "Britain, Philippines, Singapore, abbreviation, informal". The News on the Web corpus has 2800 examples, mostly from the Philippines, South Africa, Malaysia, Australia and Singapore. The lower rate of usage in Britain is probably a reflection of the weather. It seems to be very rarely used in the US.

I'll add it as a rare word.

I would say that in Britain aircon is largely used with reference to motor cars rather than houses. As you say Alan, we don't have the weather for it usually.
