OK I had appall (rare) but not appal (common) yet clicking on appal gives this:

This looks to me to be a distinct contradiction...
The greenest watt ever produced is the one you never use. Playing as jk1956 & John is my name.
When we come out of the Covid-19 crisis, we need to make sure recovery efforts address the Climate Crisis (which can't be solved using social distancing!)

I think what this entry is trying to say is that appal is the normal spelling in Britain, but less common than appall elsewhere.

Certainly other dictionaries tend to identify appal as the favoured spelling in Britain and appall as the favoured spelling in the US. Of course that doesn't explain why they should be treated differently by Chi. (I didn't play either.)

I'll look into it further in due course.
