Destock
« on: July 09, 2021, 02:43:13 PM »
Yesterday I received this email from a player:

Quote
How about the word destock in today's Challenge game?
Surely it warrants some sort of guernsey, but it isn't being
allowed as a word at all.Farmers would be very familiar with
the word when they have to sell off their animals in times of
drought or other disasters.I guess farmers are too busy to play Chihuahua,so none of them have complained about the
assessment of this word.

Well, it's in COD
(British) = reduce the quantity of stock held in a shop.

Seems straightforward enough. It should be allowed.

Also Cambridge, Collins, and Mirriam-Webster.  Seems to be well known in the business world as well as on the farm.

Perhaps business people are too busy to play Chihuahua, too. :D

In the global media, this word is mainly used for the action of a business reducing inventory. For example a Reuters article about oil in February this year: "The destocking pressure is huge in the face of weak Chinese refinery appetite, traders told Reuters."

Forms of the word destock are used much more often in Australian and NZ news media than in the US or UK, and here the context is often farming. For example, in December 2020 the Bendigo Advertiser (Australia) quoted the CEO of the National Farmers Federation:

Quote
This time last year, the grip of drought was unrelenting on large tracts of the eastern seaboard. Many grain growers had not harvested a crop in consecutive years and livestock producers had drastically, if not completely, destocked.

Destock, destocking and destocked will be accepted as rare words.

What about AFIELD?

When a suggestion is made by someone who has not made any previous suggestions - which I think is the case for the player who suggested destock - I try to answer it promptly, as an encouragement.

Apart from that, my priorities in answering suggestions are as I set out in reply to a suggestion in January this year:

Quote
1. Add word (no "plural" issue)
2. Make rare
3. Make common
4. Accept a word currently regarded as a plural, or treat as plural a word currently accepted

In the last two years only four words have been made common, so it may be a while still before I get around to considering this one.

That suggestion, that trued be made common, was first made in 2014, and has still not been considered.

I could clear the backlog very quickly, by reverting to the way I decided common/rare issues in the very early days of Chihuahua. That was to make a snap judgement on each, based on my own impressions, without any research, explanation or discussion.

Well I guess I was getting excited cause you were asking for other players opinions on AFIELD, which of those that replied, the majority felt it was well known to them.
So I’ll get back in my box and leave it to you! Who asked for TRUED? I’ll be in my sixties if you wait seven years!

Who asked for TRUED?

Hi Jacki, if you had followed the link in Alan's post just below your post you would know the answer to your question.

I am at a bit of a loss to work out why you turning 60 should be a factor in Alan's determination of the order he does his investigations.

There’s no factor Jack. It’s just that TRUED was asked for in 2014, which is 7 years ago and I’ve just turned 54 so that will make me 61! And it might still not be resolved. Anyway who cares I guess. It’s up to Allan, it’s his game and having arbitrary discussions about words being common, rare or included at all just helps pass the time. I suppose when I post about a word I’m just as interested in how other players feel about the word as I am about any changes to the rules. So let’s just forget the whole thing!
