CATARRH
« on: March 09, 2021, 06:55:57 PM »
G'day Alan, i would like to suggest a few words from recent games that you might consider for reclassification ;

CATARRH is from a recent 7 by many game.
It was found by 74 out 315 players ( about 23.5 % )
I was not one of those players who found it & it cost me a rosette.
Then in the very next 7 by many game, the only common word that i could not find was CYSTITIS ( found by just 21% of players)
Perhaps if i had the use of a LOUPE ( from previous standard game ) i might have had a better chance of finding these words.
My submission is that all 3 of these medical terms are not common for the average player & should all be made rare.

I'm surprised by your suggestion, Les, especially regarding catarrh. Do you really think that's a word that people don't know? I suspect the reason it was played by only 74 out of 315 players is that the other 241 people simply didn't spot it!

I add my vote for CATARRH to remain common.

I don't think catarrh is very well known among Australians.  I only know it from British sources (the first time I heard it was on a Monty Python record).  I can't recall anyone I know ever uttering the word in conversation.

I'm truly surprised by that. I know there are lots of words that some of us consider common but are classed as rare because they're not well known in other countries but I never would have imagined that catarrh would fall into that category.

As I know to my cost it is common over here because of our damp climate.

First time I've heard catarrh so I'm with Les on making it rare.

Catarrh has been something I have had on all too many occasions - I vote it remain common...

I suspect catarrh is relatively common, but difficult to see because of the unusual arrangement of letters and difficult to spell correctly.

I'd like to add to the chorus of catarrh being well-known to me - even though I might have trouble spelling it, and certainly trouble seeing it in a 7-by game.
In fact, I have no problem with any of the three words Les mentioned: catarrh; cystitis; or loupe.
I'm not sure Les meant to refer to loupe as being a medical term, but it is particularly common to me.
I vote they stay common.

I agree Roddles. In fact when I started playing Chi I was thrilled that loupe was common. All are certainly more familiar to me than many other common words.

Thank you for all of the feedback.
I am sure that it makes Alan's job just a little bit easier.

I would have trouble spelling catarrh, since I don't think it is commonly used in the USA, but I have certainly seen it many times. I think of it as an old-fashioned word.  I think we call it post-nasal drip now.
