Jan 19 standard -s word (not exactly a spoiler
« on: January 20, 2021, 02:01:48 PM »
Plural words with the rules of Chi can cause anomalies such as today.

The plural of Axe is Axes - banned by rule.  I get it.  But
Ax is also a word, and its plural is Axes
Axis is a word, and its plural is Axes.

Based especially on the latter, I suggest an override that add axes to the acceptable word list.

This word has been queried in the past, Tom. In one thread, Alan pointed out its commonality with other words and asked for comments. Maybe he did nothing about them because no one commented!

... there are a few other cases like axes. These ones at least, and perhaps some other more obscure words:

analysis / analyse / analyses
basis / base / bases
diagnosis / diagnose / diagnoses
ellipsis / ellipse / ellipses
marquis / marquise / marquises
paralysis / paralyse / paralyses

In fact, axes has two singular forms that would allow the word: ax and axis.

All of these plurals are currently disallowed. The issue may have never come up for most of them, but the letters for bases would probably have been available in several puzzles. Any comments?

You made this suggestion yourself, Tom, in 2018 - see here. Somebody noted during that previous discussion that I'd declared a moratorium on all changes relating to the plurals rule; that is still the case!

I noticed that in the dervishes game two of the 'troublesome' words could have been played - hives and divers. Forgetting that it would be rejected I actually played hives.  :'(

Sorry, Alan.  One of the hazards of getting old is losing your memory.  OTOH, there is something to be said for consistency. ;D

Tom, one of the advantages of taking my time in responding to suggestions is that, with any luck, other forumites will do most of my research for me.

Yep, tried "divers", but I was not surprised that it was not allowed. :)
