Shocking
« on: January 07, 2021, 06:50:31 AM »
Truly shocking what’s going on in the US right now, and a complete affront to democracy. I hope all our American friends are staying safe.

Indeed, the greatest democracy in the whole world ever, behaving like a banana republic.
You just can’t credit it.

Disgraceful.
Equally disgraceful is the fact that our PM has pointedly refused to condemn Donald Trump himself for his part in causing this riot. It seems that after addressing his supporters he suggested they march on Congress.
The entire debacle has  been caused by Trump's refusal to accept that he lost the election fair and square. Not one shred of evidence has appeared so far to suggest that there was any malpractice during the counting of the votes.
It really is ridiculous that two months after losing the presidential election Trump should still be President. In UK the name of a new Prime Minister is confirmed within hours of the result of an election being known

God knows what kind of mayhem he and his supporters are dreaming up for the day of Biden's inauguration.

And he is planning to visit Scotland later this month. He should be declared 'persona non grata' long before that happens.

It would be nice if he got stuck halfway there — permanently.

but he will get away with it and 4 people have died so far -
the worst President in history.

You got your wish Mike.
Nicola Sturgeon is banning trump from Scotland, citing Covid as the excuse.

America is near enough for us for him for those of us in the UK.
You are UNIQUE....just like everyone else

My two cents worth . . . yes it is disgraceful and deeply disturbing and many things I would prefer not to put into print.

A word about Trump still being president two months after losing the election . . . that part of it is not Trump's fault, that's how we always do it over here.  Election day is the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, but inauguration day is 20 Jan.
Carpe digitus.
(Roughly translated, this is possibly the world's oldest "pull my finger" joke)

Like a chastised child, Trump is currently either isolated on the golf course or holed up in the White House with little to say, leaving it all up to his lawyers.
My concern is that when he finally accepts that he has lost, what sort of petulant retribution or mischief will he get up to.
My limited understanding is that he remains the President until Biden is inaugurated in the middle of January.
So that gives Trump another 2 months to cause all sorts of strife as i'm sure that he will not want to go quietly.

P.S.
Can the President give himself a Presidential pardon from any prosecutions? >:D

For some time now, some people have been suggesting that at the eleventh hour (ie now) Trump will resign and Pence will become President with immediate effect.
Pence's first action as the 46th President would be to pardon his predecessor for all crimes committed while in office.

Sounds a bit 'House of Cards-ish' but I'm sure it's not totally impossible, especially if it were to keep the Trumpet out of jail for the rest of his life, which is what he deserves.

Joe Biden would then become the 47th President, as planned, on 20th January.

There is a precedent:

When Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, his successor Gerald Ford immediately granted him a pardon.

Apparently, Trump has discussed pardoning himself. That just about sums it up for this miserable man. He may just be truly (and deservedly) friendless. The loneliest person on Earth.

If the Congress were to impeach him (again), and convict him this time, I'm not sure how the pardon thing would work. Any Constitutional scholars out there?

My understanding regarding presidential pardons is that they only apply to federal offences, not state offences. I don't know if it's possible for a president to pardon himself but even if he can it's not a complete get-out-of-jail-free card. To see Trump imprisoned would be the perfect end to his rotten, corrupt presidency.

A thought: if Twitter has banned Trump, what does he do with himself all day long?

He could go on Tiktok, I don't think he actually got around to banning it!

And probably more suited for his entertainment style.
