A Technical Conundrum
« on: August 02, 2020, 11:43:43 AM »
Hi Alan, this is probably a question for you
Our server (Telstra) has crashed and I cannot access any of my usual sites.  Except yours!  Most peculiar.  As Prof SM used to say:  "Why is it so?"
Cheers Val

So the problem is?

From what I can gather, the problem affects some of the domain name servers used by Telstra, so it might be hit and miss as to which sites you can get to. Hopefully they'll be able to fix it soon.

(Telstra is the biggest internet provider in Australia - for the benefit of forumites in other countries.)

I started the 10am game at about 10am.
About 2 minutes later, the internet went down.

I could continue to play, but could not see other people scores, nor use dictionary.
I guess these use online resources.

However, game probably loads the full results, so I could continue to play, locally.

Hi Alan,  What's my problem?  Ha ha!  Indeed.  Funny lad!
Oddly, as I was trying to reply to you earlier, your site also went belly-up.
A few hours later and we are all back to normal, thank goodness.
Thank you for your super prompt response.  On the ball as always!

Have just seen the News that Telstra was hit with a cyber attack.

Val.

Yes I just went into Telstra cause our wifi is down too - didn't know about the cyber attack - if I want to pay $55 they will give me a sim card to put in a spare device like a phone to hotspot the rest of our devices until the $55 runs out (probably half an hour with two teenagers).
They won't credit the $55 sim though. Are you kidding?

Gidday Alan, when you have a moment to spare, i could do with a bit of help.
Ever since re - registering i have been having some issues ( no, not with jack, penny or anybody else ) but with my screen not refreshing.
When i submit a new post, i have to logout & log back in before i can see it.
Similarly, if i read a new post, the " new " tab remains until i logout & log back in & on the scoreboard, when my score becomes static, other players scores will not update until, you guessed it, i logout & log back in oh & the other minor frustration is that when i click on my shortcut to the site, i still have to click the sign in tab to hear the dogs puffing & actually get into the site.
I'm just not game to tamper with things in case i stuff it up completely so any advice that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Les

Les, you haven't got cookies blocked on your computer have you? That would possibly cause such problems. How to check this depends on which browser you're using (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, etc.)

Rather than logging out and in again, have you tried clicking on the browser Refresh button? That's the icon like a circular arrow in the top left area of the browser window. At least if that works it will be a bit quicker.

For the problems with Chihuahua, have you set it up to sign in automatically? If not, when you're signed in, click on the Details button just below your player name. Then in the panel that appears, enter your password as "Current password" and put a tick in the box labeled "Sign in automatically on this computer". Then click on OK down the bottom. You could also try switching to the alternate Chihuahua site and see if that's any better.

If you've finished playing, the other players' scores will not keep updating automatically, but you should be able to force an update by clicking on the button - two green arrows curving around each other - at the top of the scoreboard.
