Verbena???
('common' word, 'observance' 10-letter game)

I can honestly say I've never come across this word before.

Common? surely not.

Depends if you're a gardener or not, Mike. It's a common word to me because I usually put some in my hanging baskets each year.

I do the same Pat :)
I also have some perfume by L'Occitane called Verbena which is lovely and a bit citrussy.  Is that a real word I wonder?

In addition to being a garden plant, its leaves are also dried and used in herbal teas. This is how I am familiar with it. Some people might know it as vervain.

It's a very common garden plant.  You've probably seen it but just not known its name.

It comes in many colors - here's a link to a lot of images:

I have to admit I'm not much of a gardener, although when I lived in England (many years ago) I had a Swiss cheese plant named Cyril.

I like being among flowers and trees, but for the most part the ones I see in Thailand are quite different from those I remember from Europe.

Looking at the pictures of verbena on Google Images, they seem very pretty and quite familiar, but I would never have been able to put a name to them.

It looks as though I may have to concede defeat in this case; I'll certainly be ready for 'verbena' next time it turns up in a Chi game!

The discussion here seemed to reach a consensus that verbena is a reasonably common word, but it has remained in the list of outstanding issues.

It seems that the word appears quite often in general interest publications, especially magazines. I feel most people would have encountered the word even if, like me, they wouldn't have a hope of picking the flower out in an identity parade. I'm going to leave it as a common word.
