I too had never heard of it, I got it after thinking of it and then looking the word up first to see if it was a word. Opposite of orthodox.

There have been a few words lately (including in some "your puzzle" games) that have brought to mind some of the religious history from my A level and from Uni. Doesn't mean that I found them easily though!

Can someone please explain how  bacchanal is common, bacchanalian is common, but bacchanalia is classified as rare? Is there some logic here?

Regarding heterodox, it was originally applied to unorthodox religious views but in recent years I think it's been used more frequently of economic views outside the mainstream. Reflecting, I suppose, a shift in what is most important to us.

Regarding the bacchanal... words, I can't explain the difference off the top of my head, but I'll look into it at some stage, Scouser.

I actually use heterodox frequently, so it is very common to me.
