Missing word? - soloes
« on: February 11, 2020, 11:32:45 AM »
re the blossomed game

solo can be both a noun and a verb.
The plural of the noun is solos, which is obviously not allowed.

According to the COD, however, the verb has three inflected forms - soloing, soloes (3rd person singular, present simple) and soloed
(preterite / past participle).

In the blossomed game, soloed was allowed (common), but soloes got 'sorry, not known'.

radio is another word which behaves in the same way.
This was Alan's verdict on that:

Seconded Mike - I tried 'soloes' too.

As you say, Mike, soloes is in some dictionaries. As for usage, I expected I would find some musical examples. But the only instance I came across from the music world was using it as a noun: "Sweetening this joviality were the soloes performed by each bandmate during their introduction midway through the set".

However, soloes is used as a verb occasionally in relation to cycling races. For example, a September 2019 heading on the We Love Cycling website:

Quote
Philippe Gilbert Soloes to Victory on Stage 12 at La Vuelta

I'll add soloes as a rare word.
