Eland should be common.

To be honest I wouldn't know the difference between an eland, a springbok, a reebok, an impala and a gazelle.

I do know all of the words and it seems a bit inconsistent that some of them are common and some are rare - and one of them (springbok) is now extinct - at least in Chi!!

Let's hope that Chi remains the only place where it's extinct.

If eland is rare, then what about coypu? - 31 hits from 287 in the compulsory game.

(Yes, I know it isn't a deer or an antelope)!!

Yep another one of those quirky Chi words you learn if you play regularly.

I'd have no problem with demoting coypu to rare. The animal isn't even called coypu everywhere!

I'd vote for eland to be common.

I had to look it up and Google said its alternate name is Nutria which is Spanish for otter (Spanish crosswords!).

I like animals, so I know all the species mentioned above.  I do know springbok, though I know eland a lot better, maybe because it's one of a relatively few animal species that begins with an "e" - a requirement in the games my family played at the dinner table as I was growing up.

In a recent 7 by many dikdik came up (rare of course). A childhood devouring any book about animals paying off 50 plus years later!

Well there doesn't seem to be anyone in favour of eland remaining rare, so it will be treated as common once again from now on.

The standard for making a word common has drifted somewhat over the years. My original thinking is reflected in this explanation, which is still found on the Q&A page:

Quote
What do you mean by "common" and "rare" words?

The terms are relative - the words classed as "common" are meant to be more widely known and used than those classed as "rare". The aim is that a reasonably well-read English-speaking person will be likely to have encountered all of our "common" words at some time. There are indicators to show you how many of these common words you've found, and how many still haven't been found.

But the list relies on subjective judgement, so don't get angry if it includes some words you've never seen. You'll know them next time, right? (If you have any complaints or suggestions about the word lists, send them in, or post a message on the forum.)

There was a clear implication that not every common word would be known to every player. Perhaps it was when I began producing Chihuahua books, using the same common/rare word classification, that I started becoming more cautious about which words were treated as rare. In any case, I do seem to have ended up feeling that a word should be rare if there's any risk that some players wouldn't know it.

I'm not sure where exactly eland sits on the scale, but it's obviously a word that many people around the world are familiar with, so I'm restoring it to common status.

Thank you, Alan. Good to see an animal moved off the endangered list, at least in Chihuahua!

That's funny! And yes, thanks for listening and responding. I'll have to get used to it being common especially when I have LWS!
