Wide open question to all:

What are the connotations of heretic/heretical as you understand it?

To me, a heretic is someone who questions or opposes an established orthodoxy.  It's most commonly used in a religious context, but could be used in any context.

Off the top of my head.

Most of us live in secular societies, so religious heresy is largely irrelevant.

In a perfect world, heresy would be a bad thing because it would promote a move away from perfection.

But we live in a most imperfect world and heresy and heretics can be a good or a bad thing depending on the direction  the heretic wants to take us.

To oppose the status quo and to be able to shift towards a better world is a major vehicle for progress.

On the other hand, if people like Donald Trump get in powerful positions where they can make things happen..... Need I say more? :-R
