Lucky Accident
« on: February 18, 2019, 01:51:45 PM »
Sometimes a lucky accident happens.
Whilst entering a word in the current 10 letter puzzle, I accidentally mis-typed a letter.

The typo was a real word.
Yes, it was a word I knew, but hadn't recognised at the time.

It is a somewhat special word.
For much of the time, I was the sole player who played the word.
Now there is a second player.

I consider any word with a single digit count to be a worthwhile effort.
It doesn't happen often.

If it remains in single digits, I may have a dram tonight.

Indeed, I have done had similarly lucky accidents.  Here's hoping you get your dram tonight!

OK.
Postdating puzzle is closed now.

The word I intended to type was PITON.
I am not a climber, but I know the word.

I accidentally typed ( clicked ) PITOT.
I know the word, but probably would not have played it.

At closure there were only 2 players who played PITOT.
I guess there's not many pilots among us.

Now, off to my whisky cupboard to select a worthwhile dram.

I just clicked on PITOT to find its meaning, and it said it's either a pitot head or a pitot tube. Elucidating!

I've just played a word in the current Challenge game which would go very well with your wee dram, and I find that -at the moment - I am the sole player of that ('uncommon') word.**
I'll tell you what it is when the game is closed tomorrow.

** Update.  At the moment, with a few hours to go, it has 6 hits.

Well, of course with a challenge like that, I had to look up the word.

From the Free Dictionary.

Pitot - measuring instrument consisting of a right-angled tube with an open end that is directed in opposition to the flow of a fluid and used to measure the velocity of fluid flow

They are the little pipes you can see sticking out of an aircraft - on the fuselage, on the wings, on the tail. everywhere.

They are part of the equipment which is used to measure airspeed.

They are also used on boats.

Hope you enjoyed your dram, Whiskey.

I wouldn't have played pitot because I thought it was played pitoh.   :D
These little tubes have been known to freeze up and cause many an aircraft to crash because the computers couldn't tell the correct airspeed.  I've been obliged to sit through too many episodes of Air Crash Investigations to forget that word (even if I didn't know how to spell it  ;D)
My truth may not be your truth.  That makes neither of us right or wrong, only different.

I played a word in the recent hailstone  game which would go very well with your wee dram.

At the time I made the original post, I was the only person to have played it.
It actually finished up with 8 hits.

The word?
slainte

And....by a strange coincidence, it is an anagram of the one word I was missing for a rosette in that game - salient

So - double slainte!!

Slainte mhath

( A traditional Scottish toast - Cheers )

DOH, how could I not get that ?
Face palm.

At the risk of being boring, here's some whisky info.

Blended Whisky
A blend of many types of whisky from many distilleries.
Think Johnnie Walker etc

Single Malt Whisky
Whisky made solely from barley ( malt ).
Produced at a  single distillery, but may be a vatting of several casks.

Single Cask Whisky
On odd occasions a barrel just turns out magically well.
Rather than mix it with anything, it can be bottled as a single cask whisky.

My dram the other night was a Glenlivet 12 single cask @ a lazy 66% ABV
Bottled by the independent company - Signatory Vintage.

If whisky is your tipple of choice, try and obtain a sample of Laphroaig 40 year old single malt. I'm told by those fortunate enough to have sampled this, that it's rather special. Though at £1,000 per bottle, it should be ... :)

Now that's a tipple, fer sure.

I have had the good fortune to sip many a fine dram.
I am even more fortunate that my interest in fine whisky was piqued when many fine drams were quite affordable.

I rarely spend great sums.
I am afraid to be disappointed after spending substantial funds.

Again, I could go on, at the risk of boring those not into whisky.
I almost got a free tasting of a Black Bowmore, a few years back.
That, I rue to this day.

On the other hand I did manage to procure some Bowmore Maltmen's Selection at a much more modest price.
( That is a story in itself ).
I shared that with some friends, one of whom had tasted the legendary Black Bowmore.
He said that they were on par.

All this talk of whiskies makes me a bit nostalgic. We lived in Port Ellen on Islay (Laphroaig & Bowmore) for a few years when I was young, because my father was the Excise officer there. It was an experience.
