I rounded off 2018 with a moth trapping session on December 30th.
While other entomologists around the UK were recording Spring Usher, Mottled Umber and several other species in some numbers, including one individual in Gloucestershire who, quite remarkably, recorded a specimen of the Brimstone Moth on December 31st (!!!), all I had for my pains was one Chestnut Moth in 3 hours of waiting. And that was despite ambient temperatures being 12°C when the trap was fired up - usually, moths are pretty active when it's that warm at night.
