Word suggestion: earbud

I tried earbud in a recent puzzle but it wasn't allowed.  A modern word worth adding, I think.

Both my teenage children have them almost permanently in their ears. And they are different to earphones or earpieces so I think earbud should be considered.

Compound nouns are often my bugaboo, but even I tried earbud. I didn't fully expect it to be in the list, for the very reason that it is fairly recent, but I agree that it should be in our Chihuahua lexicon.

Earbud is in a few of the well-known online dictionaries, so it will be accepted.

The question is, should it be classed as common or rare? Since the alternate forms ear bud and ear-bud seem to be used at least as often, I surmise that quite a few players will not consider earbud to be a word, so I'm making it rare for now to be on the safe side.
