words that "ought to be"
« on: July 05, 2007, 02:00:51 AM »
No, this is not a serious topic.  This is more of a "creative exercise", with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

How about this one:  MINORSNAG

as in:  "We might have a small problem.  We seem to have hit a minorsnag."

antonym: MAJORSNAG
Carpe digitus.
(Roughly translated, this is possibly the world's oldest "pull my finger" joke)

Mine has only one word these days-- Gutenschniebels, as in, "How was school today?" "Gutenschniebels."

A family favourite is SCREEPERS. Meaning windscreen wipers.
First used by my then 3 year old daughter (she's now 22), we tend to forget it's not part of the standard English vocabulary.

We seem to have collected dozens of "family" words, including "gozzies" for contact lenses (long story, but connected to "gozzie-eyed" or cross-eyed) "mink" pies (mince pies) "smuccles".....that's the stuff that comes out when you cut yourself (don't ask)  and "earwigglers" which naturally are cotton buds. I once, to my shame, asked for "earwigglers" at a chemist!
Oh yes, and I suffer from "the twitchies"...Restless Leg Syndrome" to the rest of you.

When I was young (not so very long ago) I used to call coathangers 'hangcoaters' .... made much more sense to me and still does!
We also use 'sheeps' for more than one sheep ... if you can have cows, pigs and hens you can have sheeps in my opinion!
My boss has a very strange habit of adding an 'r' before words beginning with vowels just to be amusing/confusing ... reggs, relephants , rexactly retcetera ... v. odd but a lovely man!  >:D

I love screepers...i might adopt that word...
And i absolutely agree with the sheeps...
My 2 use 'buttonbugs' for bellybuttons or wood lice...
..and..'chicken bumps' for goose pimples..
So cute....

I really like "screepers" too. I forgot....we eat "buttyboilers"...aka Jaffles. That'll probably only make sense to you Brits!

Sorry.....I thought that Jaffles were British....toasted sandwiches that you used to make in a cast iron thingy, but now make in a spiffy electric sandwich maker.

Aah, but the difference is that you use the waffle iron to cook batter, whereas the jaffle iron is kind of hollow, so that you can put your fillings in !
