I had a
little gripe recently about people being "surprised" about a word not being accepted, or not being recognised as common. So there's no point in me mentioning it again.
Many dictionaries show
comm. with a full stop/period, but, as you point out, Tom, the online Oxford has it un-punctuated. The usage examples I found were mainly in science fiction. For example, in the 2016 novel
Impersonations, by Walter Jon Williams: "She looked at the hand comm and checked her messages." Don't ask me why she doesn't use a smart phone - I suppose a "hand comm" is more futuristic.
Anyhow, the word is around, and will be accepted from now on, as a rare word.
