Rhombi common?
« on: December 22, 2017, 08:03:31 AM »
Like the vast majority of those who played yesterday's 10 letter puzzle, I didn't get rhombi.  Indeed, only 15 of 294 players did.  In the past, similar irregular plurals like uteri and nautili have been reclassified from common to rare.  I think rhombi should be too.

Might this be one of those cases where this particular combination of letters has never cropped up in a game before, so the opportunity to query it hasn't arisen before now?

Whatever, I think it should be classed as 'uncommon' also.

MK is correct - rhombi has never been playable in a daily puzzle before. (It can only appear when the big word is THROMBOSIS.)

I agree it shouldn't be common. One might debate whether the singular rhombus should be common, but that's not at issue at present - and it probably never will be at issue, since the word can never occur in a puzzle. But regardless of whether rhombus is common, the variant plural form rhombi is very rarely seen, and some players who know rhombus might not know that it has any plural other than rhombuses. So it will be rare next time it comes up.
