That's great Christine.   Pleased to hear all the 'visitors' have gone for another year.  Sounds a real nightmare.  Those poor horses that died.

The Scottish Border district for a break sounds lovely & not too far for you to escape to either  :)

Hi Pen,

I think I have mentioned before that I generally get a Kindle as well as an Audible version of a new book.  June prefers to read rather than listen; sometimes I do too as I read faster than the audible version.  One of the advantages of the audible version is that they get the pronunciation right.  When Listening to Bruno it took me a while to work out Sandenee was just St. Denis.   Also, you can progress the story in situations where it is awkward having to manage an iPad or Book.  The sound and text keep pace with each other in the electronic versions so you can switch media and immediately pick up where you left off.

The first book in this reading binge was Martin Walker’s latest To Kill a Troubadour. This is how Fantastic Fiction summarises it

Quote
Join Bruno, France's favourite country cop, on his latest adventure as he fights to keep St Denis safe. Set in the beautiful Périgord region, The Dordogne Mysteries are the perfect combination of mystery and escapism.

It is summer in St Denis and Bruno is busy organising the annual village concert. He's hired a local Périgord folk group, Les Troubadours, to perform their latest hit 'A Song for Catalonia'. But when the song unexpectedly goes viral, the Spanish government, clamping down on the Catalonian bid for independence, bans Les Troubadours from performing it.

The timing couldn't be worse, and Bruno finds himself under yet more pressure when a specialist sniper's bullet is found in a wrecked car near Bergerac. The car was reportedly stolen on the Spanish frontier and the Spanish government sends warning that a group of nationalist extremists may be planning an assassination in France. Bruno immediately suspects that Les Troubadours and their audience might be in danger.

Bruno must organise security and ensure that his beloved town and its people are safe - the stakes are high for France's favourite policeman.

Series sometimes get a bit stale, and this happened to Bruno but the last two books have recaptured the formula that made me such a fan.  There is a lot of concentration on food and its preparation which would interest you, Pen, and the violence is low level.  Although I thought it was one of the best in the series, the ending seemed to be hurried and abbreviated.  I suspect the author was under the hammer to meet a deadline.

I can recommend this book, particularly to Bruno fans.
Regards, Jack

Hi Jack

Hope you've recovered from your celebrations ;)

Are you saying I'm a bit of a piggy?  >:D  I do love my grub as you know :)  I have read a couple of the Bruno books.  Eve bought them for me some time ago.  One was Dark Vineyard but I can't remember what the other one was called.  I think the books would make an excellent TV series, especially in that setting.  As you say I like the fact that there's very little violence.

I'm trying to chill out today as I had quite a hectic day yesterday.  It brought to mind one of my Dad's funny sayings.

Just one of the first picture please. You're not interested in Mr Rieu but how you could refer to him.  Not sure he'd appreciate it ;D
If you struggling with the group in the last picture this might help!

All on one line please.

Kylie told me that Blue's grandson, Larry, needed some extra pocket money, so he's been doing odd jobs for their neighbours. He decided he was not making enough money, so he headed off to a wealthy suburb of Brisbane . He walked up to a big house and rang the doorbell. Bruce answered and told him to paint the porch. He gave Larry a can of paint and A$25. When he went inside, his wife said, "A$25! Does he know that the porch runs all the way around the house?"
"Oh, he'll be fine." Bruce said.
An hour later, the doorbell rang. It's Larry. He said, "I'm finished mate. I even had some extra paint, so I put another coat on."
Bruce is surprised. Then Larry said, "Oh, and by the way mate, that's not a Porsche, that's a Ferrari."

That's all from me - I'm going out for a walk while the sun's out.

Hi Pen,

Almost recovered.  Yesterday was busy taking Andrew to the airport, hosting Dusty for a couple of hours, attending to responses of congratulation on Facebook and email, and getting an extra poppy nap in.

Later today I will try to get back in the normal swing of things.

To clarify what I was saying:  you are definitely not a glutton, maybe you are a gourmand, but you definitely are a gourmet.

Quote
The way you eat your food classifies you into either one of the three G’s!

Burgers, pizzas, sweets, fries, pastries…love ‘em all? Feel it’s not a bad idea to binge? Then, for all you know, you might be a glutton!  A glutton is a person who eats excessively and is habitually greedy. One wouldn’t expect a glutton to politely leave the last pakora on the plate. He’ll happily devour that too!  The word can also be used of a person who is eager for more of something, usually unpleasant.

For eg: A glutton for work is one who wants to do more work, irrespective of how tiring it might be.

Gourmand and gourmet are two other words that refer to people who love good food. Anyone who is devoted to eating lots of good food may be classified as a gourmand while a gourmet knows a lot about good food and drink and is competent to pass judgment in matters of taste.

P.S.  Was that a polite version of what your father said?  >:D

Hi Jack

Gearing up for a busy morning so I thought I'd do a quick post before the hordes arrive!

I'll take being a gourmand but I'm not sure I could be classed as a gourmet.  I think that's probably more your field of expertise.  You have a much wider knowledge of food & drink than me :)
I'm more of a I know what I like sort of person

I only ever heard my Dad use that expression.  Is there a racier version? >:D   Probably not suitable for my delicate ears

Have to relinquish my computer so it's bye bye for now :)

I know it's childish but this tickled me

Hi Pen,

I expected there would be.  However, Google failed to find me one.  I'll take it up in the spoiler report which I will get to today.

The nuns taught me that the road to hell is paved with good intentions and I am worried because I didn't follow through on my prediction of improving my performance yesterday. I'll try to get my halo back today.

Hi Pen,

For everybody else, this rebus is the title of a 1945 movie but for you, Pen, it has a special local significance.  I am not sure you are a fan.

Hi Jack

That was a very clever rebus & made me grind my teeth

My rebus is dead simple & as easy peasy as you could hope for :) It'll definitely be in with a chance of winning the easiest puzzle award! It's a film from the same year that Rod Marsh, the cricketer, was born.

Please ignore Paddington in the first picture & lose the first letter of the second picture.

A man received the following text from his neighbour:
I am so sorry Bob. I've been riddled with guilt and I have to own up. I have been taking advantage of your wife, day and night when you're not around. In fact, more than you. I'm not getting any at home, but that's no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won't happen again.
The man, anguished and betrayed, went into his bedroom, and has a long drawn out row with his wife about her infidelity.
A few minutes later, a second text came in:
Correction: I meant "wifi", not "wife"

Leave you with a very naff joke - nearly home time :)

This is very silly but made me chuckle

Hi Pen,

I know this doesn't apply to you. ;D

Blue flew down to Sydney and went to a clinic.

Blue: When I donate blood, I don't extract it myself, the nurse does it for me.

Receptionist: I understand sir, but this is the sperm bank, it doesn't work that way here....

Blue then booked into the hotel next door.  The receptionist explains the services in his room, including that there is a TV.

Blue: Ah says Blue, I've heard about hotel TV in Sydney, I hope the porn is disabled?

Receptionist: No you sick pervert, it's normal porn

Blue then asked the receptionist for a wake-up call.

Receptionist: your best years are slipping away from you!  You drink too much. What are you *doing* with your life...?!?

Hi Jack

If only that were true   It's probably a mixture of what I think I do & what I actually do! Weighted towards what I think I do most of the time :)

Loved your cartoons & Blue made me laugh out loud >:D

I've had a day off today & it's been non-stop.  I did some chores & shopping & then put some washing out.  It rained so I brought it in & then pegged it out again.  Gave up the fight when it rained again :-R I went to visit Kim this afternoon.  She Lesley's widow - the funeral I went to last Friday.  She's having good days & bad days which is only to be expected.  It's very early days yet.

Going to search for a few words & slump in my comfy chair :-Y  I'll be back with a rebus tomorrow :)

Hi Pen,

The book I liked best in my recent reading was A Sunlit Weapon by Jacqueline Winspear.  It is the 17th in her Maisie Dobbs series.

Quote
Late September 1942. Jo Hardy, a 22-year-old ferry pilot, is delivering a Spitfire to Biggin Hill Aerodrome when she realizes someone is shooting at her aircraft. When she returns to the location on foot, she finds an African American serviceman in a barn, tied up and gagged. Jo hurries away, but can't shake the image of the serviceman from her mind.

Several days later, when Jo recounts the story to several other women, she receives the news that Erica, another ferry pilot flying the same route she had has been killed in a crash near Kent. Erica's death is attributed to 'pilot error,' but Jo is convinced there is a link between her own experience and Erica's - and that of Jo's dead fiancé, who was killed over a year earlier under inexplicable circumstances in the same area.

Tragedy strikes two days later when another ferry pilot crashes in the same area where Jo’s plane was attacked. At the suggestion of one of her colleagues, Jo seeks the help of psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs.

Meanwhile, Maisie’s husband, a high-ranking political attaché based at the American embassy, is in the thick of ensuring security is tight for the first lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt, during her visit to Britain. There’s already evidence that German agents have been circling: the wife of a president represents a high-value target. Mrs Roosevelt is clearly in danger, and there may well be a direct connection to the death of the woman ferry pilot and the recent activities of the two American servicemen.

To guarantee the safety of the First Lady—and of the soldier being held in police custody—Maisie must uncover that connection.

Hi Jack

Having a less hectic day today.  I've been up to Barbs for a walk, cuppa & catch up :)  Am now trying to match your rather sneaky rebus.  Having given it a lot of thought - (the time it takes for the kettle to boil >:D) my rebus is actually an Elvis song with only a slight nod to things culinary

Please lose the last letter of the singer's name in picture three.
If I don't win with that I'll eat my hat

A Sunlit Weapon sounds intriguing & a real page turner :)

I went to the doctors this morning & said I feel like I've got some cutlery stuck in my throat...
The doctor had a look & said "It's nothing serious - you just need to have utensils taken out!"

These tickled me - I hope they stick.
