A great second favourite book :)

Without getting too academic, I think it's true to say that there are very few works of fiction that have had as much influence on popular Western culture in the last 150 years or so as 'Alice'.
In popular music Jefferson Airplane's 'White Rabbit' is an obvious example while John Lennon and David Bowie were both great admirers of Lewis Carroll.
So many fantasy films refer to the novel - and not just films based directly on 'Alice' but others such as David Bowie and Jim Henson's 'Labyrinth'.
As for books, my own favourite HHGG has in its pages any number of references to Lewis Carroll's masterpiece.

'If you've done (thought) six impossible things before breakfast (the White Queen in 'Looking Glass'), why not round it off with dinner at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe'

Hi Pen,

You’ve destroyed one of my illusions.  We were told the English had baths not showers.  Just shows you can’t believe everything you read.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  So, I am going to propose a song as well.

Hi Jack

I think we're a bit of a mixed bunch   My friend Eve will always choose a bath over a shower any day.  She loves a soak.  I'd rather be in & out a bit lively & it's easier to wash your hair in the shower!

Please explain dragging the chain? Have I asked you that before? :-\

I enjoyed my lunch & a lovely walk in the woods near Woburn Golf Club.  The blazing sun we were promised hasn't materialised so we could walk comfortably :)

I've just got back & logged in & your cartoons really tickled me & your rebus made me laugh out loud   A real blast from the past!

My simple little rebus is another song - probably pre-dates yours by a few years!

Please lose the first letter of the first picture & also the first letter of the man in the second picture.  Loved Miami Vice ;)

Wonder if you can guess what I'm having for tea :-H  Thought I'd kill two birds with one stone >:D

I've consulted Ms Google Mike ;)  It depends which version of my rebus you want. You can have George Formby or Herman's Hermits amongst others.  One's 1937 & the other's 1966. (oh dear it's that year again >:D) As far as I can see Jack's rebus was a hit in 1959.
I'm very happy to stand corrected :)
It's turned out nice again

SPOILER ALERT - Mike's rebus

SPOILER ALERT - My rebus

SPOILER ALERT - Pen's rebus

Dragging the Chain
Australian Slang. Meaning:
1. To procrastinate.
2. To fall behind relative to others.
3. To unwittingly hold up progress.
4. To deliberately hold up progress by acting slowly.

"I was late to work again because John was dragging the chain this morning."

The term stems from the railway when chains and hooks connected the carriages or goods trucks. If the rear chain came lose from the secured position it would drag on the ground slowing progress.

George Formby's 'Lamppost' was 1937
Lonnie Donegan's 'bedpost' was 1959
However, as Jack mentions in his spoiler, the 'chewing gum' song itself (but with 'spearmint' in the title) goes back to 1924!

Never mind! Let's not get pedantic!
My offering today is something that John Donne, the preacher and poet wrote in 1624, 300 years before the 'spearmint' song;

eight words - 2/3/2/2/6/6/2/6

picture 3 - delete the first and last letters of this rock band's name
picture 4 - delete the last letter
picture 6 - delete the first letter
picture 8 - delete the last letter
picture 9 - delete the first letter

Hi Pen,

Lousy weather here today. It’s not often I wish I were somewhere else, but here would do.

Mike I think the moral there is "always read the spoiler!" ;D

I got the first half of your rebus with no effort required.  The last bit took me considerably longer.  A great brainteaser :)

Hi Jack

It's boily roasty here today & I suspect it's similar where you'd like to be   I watched the highlights last night.  It's just not the same without Peter Alliss.  So sadly missed :'( Big shoes to fill.  Rory McIlory had a shocker - looked like he just wasn't with it. Not a big fan of his I have to be honest.  Justin Rose & Tommy Fleetwood were trundling along quite nicely :)

I'll see your rebus & offer you a couple along a similar line!

10 (#4 + #6)

You need the last word of the picture.

6 (#4 + #2) #5

Please just use half of the second picture.

A 1986 song from Paul Simon

seven words, including a definite article which is not pictured - 8/2/3/5/2/3/5

picture 5 - only the first three letters

Hi Pen,

I just worked out what the whole word was is in your second rebus.  Could it be midnight? :D

My rebus is the name that Titus gave a building in Rome when he was opening it.  At least it would have been the name if he spoke English rather than Latin.  We now know it as something different. So bonus questions are:  What do we know it as?;  Why was it called that?

7(#2  #5)  12(#5  #7)

Conceptionally one line.

Picture 1.  Ditch the last letter.
Picture 2. General description of the contents.  No, will not do.
Picture 3. First 5 letters of the first word.
Picture 4.  The noun, not the adjective.

Good Luck
