It's quite a nice day here, Pen.  Breezy but bright.  Just been on a mahoosive walk with old fella.  Lovely to see the wild flowers again and the shoots on our apple tree are emerging so hopefully it won't be too long before we get lots of lovely white blossoms.  I am on furlough so have plenty of time on my hands - the house has never looked cleaner which is typical when you know you're not going to get any visitors to admire your efforts!  Scrambled eggs for my for lunch - v. nice but not a patch on the proper egg sarnie you had.  Keep safe!  >:D

Thanks Linda :)  It sounds like Spring has almost sprung in your neck of the Woods.   I am exceedingly jealous of your extended nature ramble.  (One of the few benefits of being furloughed?) It's so beautiful where you are. As my friend Bex says splendiferous  We had a nice day yesterday & I did loads washing & got it dry on the line.  The blossom has started to appear here & there is a magnolia tree just along the road which is gorgeous.  Our local council planted swathes of daffs, crocus & hyacinth in the local park.   Not wild flowers but still brings a smile :)
I think scrambled egg on toast is yummy.  Nearly a tie with my egg sarnie I reckon!
If you get really bored you can always nip down here & clean my house >:D
You also stay well & keep safe :)

Hi Pen,

I was just sitting at my computer when Andrew came up and said what I thought was “dumb arse”. Before I could give him a quick response of “shit face”, he went on “that should be your next author for a puzzle".  So family hostilities avoided, here it is. It is a book that has spawned a plethora of films.

3 3 2 3 4 4

The   |  The    |

The fact that the photo in the middle is of Steve Jobs is irrelevant - it was a random pick.

Bonus Questions:

1.   Name one theory about who the mystery person could be?
2.   How did the country’s ruler at the time of the story die?
3.   And, of course, who was “dumb arse”

Must rush – gotta be at Ontrac in 30 minutes.

Hi again, Pen

I am exercised and rested.

Either I am getting deafer (a very distinct possibility) or Andrew needs elocution lessons

Comrade, he said

Tovarich", I replied giving my best impersonation of Gough Whitlam, “When did you come across to the socialist fold”.

What he said next was murmured so softly I couldn’t catch it but I swore I lip-read “Deaf old bugger" but aloud he said, “I was giving you an author for your next Puzzle”.

I think I’ve worked out what he really said and so I suppose I should do something about it.  If I am right according to Wikipedia the author was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature.

So here goes: 3 5 2 8(4 4)

The of

Bonus Questions:

What was the author's original name?
Who was the central character in the book?
What is the relationship of Apocalypse Now to the book?

The others have got a head start on the seven-by-many, so I must go.

Hi Jack

Another strange & quiet day at work.  I've managed to solve the first puzzle :)  (totally stumped on the second)  It took me a while to twig on that dumb arse was Alexandre Dumas >:D  Numpty!
The titular character was believed to be the twin brother of Louis XIV.
Louis XIV died of gangrene at the Palace of Versailles on 1st September 1715.

I'm sitting at a computer I've never used before & couldn't get on chrome.  I found a couple of funny cartoons but can't post them so I've downloaded them & hopefully I'll add them on at the end.  I could do with an Andrew this morning as I'm a bit low on inspiration for a puzzle at the moment.

I'll adjourn til after lunch when I'll be back in my normal spot on reception & can give better attention to your second puzzle.  I'm only seeing the bar of chocolate at the moment :-H

I'll be back Jack...

re the second puzzle

It was also the title of one of the funniest episodes of one of the greatest sitcoms of all time - 'One Foot in the Grave'

It's the episode where Victor and Mrs Warboys manage to get their feet stuck in a block of concrete during a boating trip.

Well spotted, Mike.  Season 4, Episode 3

The episode is where the Meldrews visit the countryside for a day out with Nick Swainey and Jean Warboys. They take to the river and end up getting lost in the mist. Back on land, a sudden downpour forces them to take refuge in an abandoned van . Victor and Jean become trapped in a bag of cement. Trying to find their way back to the car, they end up walking in circles. Victor goes off to find help and discovers a home for the elderly where the staff have a strange way of caring for the residents.  This part of the episode dealing with abuse in the old people’s home, caused a certain amount of controversy for its scenes of violence – to the point where the episode was edited for all future broadcasts.

All that is from google. I never actually watched a full episode of the program - now I wished I had.

Carrot and coriander soup and two small wholegrain toast for me, Pen.  Getting obsessed with food at moment!  Trying to make today a 'no meat' day so some sort of fish tonight, I think. Lots of coffee inbetween!   >:D

Sounds good to me Linda.  I'm obsessed with food too at the minute - seem to be always hungry!  Wonder if it's boredom?  Sat on a reception desk with very few patients to deal with.  That's how it should be but it makes the days very long :-Y  Fish, chips & mushy peas for tea?  I've got fish fingers, chips & beans :-H  We have a Costa in the hospital.  They've sent round loads of little cans of a coffee drink.  Can't honestly say I'm a big fan of cold coffee. A pity but I would have been happier with a normal cup of hot americano!

Hi Pen,

Your cartoons highlighted my hearing problem.  I just had a conversation with Andrew.

Andrew:  What about Talking?
Me:      Not a problem, I'll chat with anyone,
Andrew:  No, I said Tolkein
Me:      No good, he writes about Hobbits and they know everything about Hobbits on Chi
Andrew:  Then what about bein'?
Me:      I don't have a choice, do I?

Andrew walked off disgustedly muttering something about a genius who was a drinker with a writing problem and that New York was his Lourdes, where he went for spiritual refreshment ... a place where he would least likely to be bitten by a wild goat.

This didn't make sense to me, but I googled it and found out who he was talking about.

So tonight's problem is about a play. 3 5 6(4 2).  Hint: Remove the first letter of the first picture, or perhaps it is best described as a diagram.

The

Bonus Questions:

What prison is the play set in?

What does the play have in common with the TV series The Prisoner?

It's way past my bed-time.   :-Z :-Z

I'm back Jack

It took me a little while to realise that you & Mike have helped me out with your second puzzle :)
The author's original name was Josef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski.  The central character in the book is Charles Marlow.  Apocalypse Now is based on Joseph Conrad's book but is set in the jungles of Vietnam.

My puzzle is a film based on a novel.  3, 4, 2, 4.

For your bonus please name the two main stars of the film.
Who wrote the book upon which the film is based.
What has Carlsberg got to do with it?

Found a you a silly joke ;D
A cowboy rode into town & stopped at a saloon for a drink.  Unfortunately, the locals had a habit of picking on strangers.  When he finished his drink & went outside he found his horse had been stolen.
He went back into the bar & tossed his gun into the air & niftily caught it above his head before firing a shot into the ceiling.  "Which one of you yokels stole my horse" he shouted with surprising forcefulness!
Nobody answered.
"Alright I'm going to have another beer, & if my horse ain't back outside by the time I finish, I'm gonna do what I dun in Texas!  And I don't like to have to do what I dun in Texas!"
Some of the locals shifted uneasily.
True to his word the cowboy finished his beer & went outside where his horse had been returned to the post.  He saddled up & started to ride out of town.  The bartender wandered out of the bar & said "say partner before you go... what happened in Texas?"
The cowboy turned back & said "I had to walk home."

Just noticed you've snuck another post in while I wasn't looking.
The talking/Tolkein/Hobbit made me laugh out loud  Brilliant & clever.  Cheered me up no end!

The play is The Quare Fellow & is set in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin.
The connection with The Prisoner is Patrick McGoohan :)

Just over an hour & I can go home for a cup of builders :-)
Sometimes it's the little things...

normal cup of hot americano!

Presactly!  Black, no sugar and strong!  I am going to have M & S fishcakes, new(ish) potatoes and beans or Heinz spaghetti for my tea.  The excitement of it is immense!  Have just spent the best part of an hour sat in the garden watching son's bedding drying in the breeze!  Must be bored because I won't be seeing him for the foreseeble as he lives in Leeds and it could easily have waited to be done but it has filled in some time and I do love to see clothes on the line in the sun.  Might go and scrape some spuds now before I settle down to watch The Chase!!  >:D

Hi Pen,

You’ll have to trust me that I know the answers because a lot of our regulars wouldn’t have had the opportunity to try the puzzle. I will say it was devilishly clever and quite cryptic except for the last picture.  Once again I would never have cracked it without the character count.

I think it is safe to answer your last bonus question.

The beer that the crew drank at journey's end in the novel is American Rhinegold. Although it's not actually a German beer, it certainly sounds like one. As the war was still a very fresh memory in many people's heads at the time, the decision was made to go with Danish Carlsberg beer instead. In reality, as Denmark was occupied by the Germans in World War II, they would not have been able to get Carlsberg in Egypt. More likely, they would have had the local beer.

Carlsberg made a 30 second ad using footage from the movie.  Another bit of trivia was that in making the movie they decided to use real beer  The scene took 14 takes to put in the can so the main actor finished up pissed.

Ontrac at 8, so must :-Z :-Z
