I had a lot of Frank Muir material which I had recorded from radio programmes on audio-cassette tapes. I was about to start transferring them to CD when my sister's cellar, where the tapes were being stored, flooded and I lost them all.

Made in 1950, this film, described on the posters as 'A Hollywood Story'. has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
How is that possible? How could anyone give this film a negative review?

two words - 6/9

You will need to abbreviate the answers to pictures 3 and 4

I was confused....so I Googled and came up with this on Wiki

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 99% of critics gave the film a positive review based on 71 reviews, with an average rating of 9.3/10. The critical consensus states: "Arguably the greatest movie about Hollywood,

Hi Pen,
It was not only the lockdown that kept me indoors yesterday but it was also the lousy weather. I know it is close to treason to say that in Queensland.

Although the lockdown is over, we still have to wear masks anywhere we are likely to come in contact with people.  Our Cleveland butcher has a message on his Blackboard 'Batman never needed to be reminded to wear his mask' or something like that.

Blue walks into the Redland Bay pub.
What’ll you have?” the barman asks.

Give me three pints of VB, please,” says Blue

The barman brings him three pints, and the Blue proceeds to sip them alternately — the first one, the next one, and then the third one, until they’re all gone. He then orders three more.

Sir,” says the barman, “I know you like them cold but you don’t have to order three at a time. I can keep an eye on you, and when you get low, I’ll bring you a fresh cold one.”

“You don’t understand,” Blue says. “I have two brothers, one in Victoria and one in New South Wales. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we would still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three VBs too, and we’re drinking together.”

What a wonderful tradition,” the barman says, smiling.

Every week after that, Blue comes into the bar and orders three beers. But one week, he orders only two. He drinks them and orders two more.

I know what your tradition is,” says the barman sadly, “and I’d just like to say that I’m sorry that one of your brothers died.”

Oh, my brothers are fine,” says Blue. “I just quit drinking.”

The poetry that is inspired by war is, understandably, rarely cheerful or cheering to the reader.  But, I have the feeling it deserves to be read.  My rebus to today is another first line from a poem.  The poet was an English Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse in WWI, writer, feminist, socialist, and pacifist.

All the pictures are conceptionally on one line.

Picture 6 is an Australian fish of the family Lotidae, a group of cod-like fishes.  You need to ditch the first letter.

Hi Jack

It's muggy & sticky here this afternoon.  I think we'll have a storm before the day's out.  Hope it's not too bad or I'll be in the cupboard under the stairs   Fortunately you don't get many rotten days weather wise :)

We've been wearing masks for over a year now.  When I've had one on for 8 or 9 hours solid at work (apart from a 30 minute lunch break) I feel horrible :(  Thirsty & my skin feels very dry.

Your Blue joke cracked me up   Properly tickled me!

I presume your letters & numbers is like our version of Countdown!

I've not completely solved your rebus.  I'll return to it a bit later on :)

I was a bit stumped for a rebus this afternoon.  I heard a record on the car radio & am going to try it. Released in 1975.

I've played a bit fast & loose with my homophones >:D

SPOILER ALERT - Mike's rebus

SPOILER ALERT - My rebus

SPOILER ALERT - Pen's rebus

Hi Pen,
We have just started our (at least) 4th repeat of letters and numbers.

Quote
Letters and Numbers is an Australian game show on SBS One. It is hosted by former newsreader Richard Morecroft, co-hosted by David Astle and Lily Serna. Although it is based on the French game show Des chiffres et des lettres, its structure is similar to the UK version of the show, Countdown - with the titular difference being used to avoid confusion with the Australian music program Countdown.

The series began airing on 2 August 2010. On 22 June 2012 SBS announced its decision to "rest" the show and the final episode aired on 27 June 2012. Repeat episodes are still shown on SBS.

To both Pen and Jack - your rebuses are becoming more and more devious.  Excellent :D

My offering today seems very straightforward. A very scary British film from 1984, based on a 1979 short-story by Angela Carter, to my mind one of the best of post-war British writers.

four words, including a definite article and an 'of' which are not pictured - 3/7/2/6

picture 1 - use only the first three letters
picture 4 - Don't know anything about football? The banners in the crowd might help you

Hi Pen,
Just a rebus this morning. Enough poetry for a while. Back to books and subsequent movies from the 1970s and 80s.

some hints only if you need them

Thanks Mike.  I'd like to return the compliment as your rebuses are very clever & a bit sneaky :)
I have no idea what you boys were saying in your last 2 posts
I know what carpe diem means but beyond that I'm baffled ;D

Howdy Jack

Both Mike & yourself have excelled yourselves again with your rebuses :)  I've solved both but I have to own up that I used your extra hints ;D

I've been deadheading my rose bush & had left it far too long!  I'm now covered in scratches :(  My washing's on the line but I don't think it'll be there for long as it's

I was busy in my garden and the neighbour looked over the fence and said, "What are you doing?"
I said, "I'm putting all my plants in alphabetical order."
She replied, "Really? I don't know how you find the time."
"Oh that's easy," I said. "It's right next to the sage!"

Hi Pen,

Was the first set of pictures meant to be a rebus I should do a spoiler alert for? It is a top rebus but one which people outside the midlands might find difficult.

On my iPad the last picture on your rebus didn’t come out. I can’t check whether that is the case on my computer until after 6 (your 9 PM) but from the URL would have been something like this from 1967

Hi Jack. The first set of pictures was a bit of silly fun & a sort of rebus! An old expression in my family. Please post a spoiler if you think anybody may be interested!
My last picture hasn't come out on my 'phone either :( Your substitute is, of course, perfect :)
Off to look at Brokenwood :)
