Thanks Jack :)

Hope you made it through to the morning without disturbing the mutts!

I'm going to have another bash at solving the rest of your rebus, hunt for a few words then settle down with a glass of pink plonk to watch another episode of Brokenwood.  So pleased Mike told us about it :)

If life gives you lemons, add a large gin & some tonic...

Hi Pen,
Bonnie and Dusty slept, or at least were quiet, until just after 6 O’clock.  They are a bit wild now.

We saw all the available episodes of Brokenwood and are hanging out for the release of the new series. Thanks from us too, Mike.

Blue got a job on the dole counter in Centrelink, our social service organisation.

A young bloke with his pants hanging half off his arse, two gold front teeth, and a half-inch thick gold chain around his neck; walked into his office to sign some paperwork.

He marched up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know, I just HATE being on the DOLE. I'd really rather have a job. I don't like taking advantage of the system, getting something for nothing, and all that."

Blue said, "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter. You'll have to drive around in his 2021 Mercedes-Benz CL, and he will supply all of your clothes."

"Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll also be expected to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips. This is rather awkward to say, but you will also have to, as part of your job, satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sex drive."

The young bloke’s eyes were bugging out and he just licked his lips then said, " You're bullshittin' me!"

Blue smiled at him and said, "Yeah, well... You started it."
Regards, Jack

Carol,

That has to be in the entries for the best wrong answer. It fits the word count. It fits the pictures. It is a genuine food. It just a pity O’Bryan didn’t know about it.  ;D

Pickled Pigface

Place water, vinegar, sugar, lemon zest pieces, whole cumin seeds and salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Place the sliced endive and pigface in a bowl. Pour pickling liquid over the vegetables and set aside to cool. Once cooled, drain vegetables and remove zest pieces.

I'm feeling in quite a sneaky mood today.
This 1947 play which is set in Northern England, has become a classic of English drama. It is studied in schools and has appeared on GCSE Eng. Lit. syllabuses.
Alastair Sim gave one of his greatest performances in the 1954 film. It has also been filmed more recently  by the BBC.

three words - 2/9/5

picture 4 - you might want to add an 's'

I'll try to make the pics slightly bigger

That's a bit better. I've changed a couple of the pictures, but the answer is still the same.

Hi Mike,

I have to admit I was completely flummoxed by your excellent devilishly clever rebus.  But as luck would have it, I have imported an expert from Canberra at great expense (his own, of course). He arrived this morning and he managed to solve it.

I will respond with an existentialist novel written 40 odd years before that was also the basis of a TV movie in the 40s and another movie several years ago.

The 3 letter words are the first 3 letters of a longer word or words pictured.  The 3rd picture would have to be in Texas.

You are not interested in the name of the actor in the last picture but a role he played.

I think I tried reading this years ago when I was still at school. I had enjoyed reading other things written by this author (I won't say what - it would give the game away) but this left me totally bemused,
It's on Gutenberg, so it's free, so I might try reading it again.

Hi Mike

I have to say that both Jack & yourself are both being very sneaky at the moment >:D  I did solve yours in the end after several attempts.  I've got half of Jack's. (the second half!)
Safe to say I'm clinging to both your coattails

Hi Jack

I'm not sure that it's within the rules to fly in additional help >:D  Especially as I don't have the brains of the outfit here to lend expert assistance

Both you & Mike are cooking on gas at the moment ;)  Some brilliantly clever & sneakily difficult rebuses!  I sorted Mike's after a few false starts but I've only got half of yours.  I might have to resort to Ms Google.

My rebus is a cracking film from the 1940's. Don't think I'll fox you with this!

Please shorten the name of the gent in the second picture & remove a letter from the fourth picture.

Pleased to hear that Andrew's back with you :)

Going to have a cuppa then a rummage in the fridge :-H

A 1934 American crime novel, considered very 'sexy' at the time.
The 1946 film version is now considered a classic; the 1981 version became quite notorious

five words including a definite article which is not pictured; 3/7/6/5/5

Picture 2 - delete the first letter and add an 's'

Hi Pen,
Mike and Andrew share a common characteristic.  They have an enormous store of obscure knowledge.  This morning, Andrew told me an interesting story about Lewis Carrol and when I followed it, I came across this.
Quote
Interesting Facts about Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll (1832-98) is celebrated around the world as one of the great purveyors of ‘literary nonsense’: his books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871) have entertained countless readers since they were published nearly 150 years ago. For many, the name ‘Lewis Carroll’ is synonymous with children’s literature.

But ‘Lewis Carroll’ was really a man named Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematician at Christ Church, Oxford. As such, he led something of a double life: to the readers of his Alice books, he was Lewis Carroll, while to the world of mathematics and to his colleagues at the University of Oxford he was (Reverend) Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a man who formed his pen name by reversing his first two names (‘Charles Lutwidge’ became ‘Lewis Carroll’).

There is a famous anecdote about Carroll and Queen Victoria. Victoria enjoyed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland so much that she requested a first edition of Carroll’s next book. Carroll duly sent her a copy of the next book he published – a mathematical work with the exciting title An Elementary Treatise on Determinants. Unfortunately, like most good anecdotes, this one isn’t true: Carroll himself refuted it. However, such a story does highlight the oddness of Carroll’s double life. Carroll, despite the radical nature of his nonsense fiction, was a conservative mathematician who resented and dismissed many of the new ideas emerging in mathematics during the nineteenth century.

How did this come up? Andrew gave me a suggestion for a rebus.  It is a moralistic poem that Carroll parodied in Alice in Wonderland.

The title of the poem was

#5  2 3 8(#4  #4)

of the
Picture 1.  One of his many nicknames.

Who was the author of the poem and what was the name of Carroll’s parody?

To put a grin on your face while you are doing the rebus

The second picture held me up for a while - I thought it was something entirely different.
I had to look up the author of the poem, but Messrs Wiki came good in the end.

I had actually planned to use a 'Carroll-based' rebus myself today, but it will keep for another time.
