A very recent TV serial; a performance of titanic proportions from the leading lady.

three words - 4/2/8

picture 1 - the larger of the two
picture 2 - the first two letters of what the 'man in red' is saying

Hi Pen,

It's great that you are making the most of your break.

My rebus today is an old Tibetan proverb that was used in a 1980s American adventure-romance film set in the 1920s. It has since been used as a title of a book co-authored by an Australia Football Coach and an ex-player who became a sports scientist.

The proverb - 3  #2  2  #4  #3  3  #5  2  #7

There are 2 "the"s and 2 "is"s that are not pictured

The Movie – 3  #4  #4  #2   #5  only one “the”.

Picture 3.  Leftmost letters

Bonus question: How is the movie blessed?

Regards, Jack

Hi Jack

My week's whizzed by in a flash!  It's been very enjoyable - not even spoilt by the rain today!

I'm feeling almost smug >:D  After a few false starts I managed to solve all three rebuses :)  All of which were brilliant, clever & a little bit sneaky.  I couldn't answer the bonus question but I'll probably find the answer if I consult Ms Google!

My rebus is an old proverb.  I found several different versions of it. Apparently it dates back to Chaucer!

#4 #5 #3 #3 #5'1 8 (#4 + #4)

THE'S
Please remove the first letter from the third picture & assume it's all on one line.

Leave you with a small random selection.  Not sure I fancy a walk in the rain.  Might put the kettle on instead ;D

Hi Pen,

I admire your ability to keep coming up with funny previously-unused cartoons and jokes.  Lately, I have found it takes too much of my time to search out new and worthy items.  If one drops into my lap, I use it but I rarely spend time searching any more.

I do enjoy developing rebuses and particularly enjoy those that have an interesting back story with information that may not be widely known. They can, however, take up a lot of time.

The one I have chosen today is an American idiom that was used in the headline of a newspaper article about our Prime Minister on Thursday.  When looking into it, I found the idiom was also the title of a novel that spawned a movie.

1  #3  #4  3  1  #6  #5

Two “a”s and an “and” not pictured.

Last Picture – drop the last “s”.

Must get about family duties or my name will be mud.
Regards, Jack

A 1969 novel and a 1981 film set in 'that largest bite from the underside of England's outstretched south-western leg' (to quote the first line of the novel).

four words - 3/6/11/5

You will need to add an apostrophe in the appropriate place.
Picture 4 - only one of them, any one will do.

Bonus point for naming the place referred to in the novel's opening line.

A cracking rebus Mike - solved by no1 daughter :)
From that I solved the bonus question.  At least I hope I have.  It's a place where I spent holidays as a child :)

G'day Jack

A much better day today now it's stopped raining :)

Zoe solved Mike's very clever rebus & I've just got to the bottom of your tricky one so we're level pegging on the day

I'm doing a little Shakespeare for my rebus.
#3 #5 #5 #2 7 (#4 + #3)

THEOF
The second & third pictures both relate to the second word.  The last picture is a homophone.

I've found a chip shop in West London that serves it's fish on photocopier paper...
it's a little plaice on the A4!

A man put his car in reverse and accidentally drove it into a wall. He took it to his mechanic, who replaced the dented bumper.
A few days later, he actually did it again. "I'm so embarrassed," he moaned to his wife while he reached for the phone.
"Why not tell him it was me this time?" his wife suggested.
"I could," he said while dialing, "but that's what I told him last time."

Leave you with a couple of silly jokes ;D

Hi Pen,

Gotta get this posted before the Coorparoo mob arrive for a fish and chip lunch.

Blue goes into a restaurant and is seated.  All the waitresses are gorgeous. A particularly voluptuous waitress wearing a very short skirt and legs that won’t quit walks up to his table and asks if he is ready to order. “What would you like, sir?”

He looks at the menu, scans her beautiful frame top to bottom, then answers, “A quickie.”

The waitress turns and walks away in disgust.  After she regains her composure, she returns and asks again,“What would you like, sir?”

Again, Blue thoroughly checks her out and answers, “I’d like a quickie, please.”

This time, the waitress’s anger takes over — she reaches over and slaps him across the face with a resounding “SMACK!” and storms away.

A man sitting at the next table leans over and whispers,“Um, I think it’s pronounced ‘quiche.

[hr[]

And to finish, a quickie rebus to honour the day.  A Movie.

One of the greatest heroes in all of twentieth century literature.
Small, quiet, unassuming with large hairy feet.

two words - 5/7

picture 4 - make it plural

Hi Jack

A very appropriate rebus. Both Mike & yourself are excelling yourselves in the rebus department at the moment :)  I think I'm trailing behind a little at the moment

My rebus is a book by one of my favourite authors published in 1989.

#8 #3 #8

The second picture represents the second & third words.  I suspect you'll find this far too easy.  My only consolation is that you probably wont have a clue who the band are >:D

I have a ham & egg sarnie calling me :-H

I'm back Jack!

I've come up with another rebus.  Not sure it'll be any trickier but here goes nowt!

It's a book by a prolific children's author.

#3 #5 #2 12 (#7 + #5)

THEOF
The third picture is a homophone.

I'll leave you with a cryptic puzzle.  It's another book by the same author.
The word pattern is #4 #4 but you have to work out the title by using the pictures.

That's it my poor little grey cell is worn out ;D

If life gives you lemons, add a large gin & some tonic...

re the Rumour that Pen is related to the subject of my last rebus:
I'm fairly sure that Pen doesn't have large, hairy feet (well brushed when visitors are expected) with naturally leather-like soles. So, probably not a blood relation.

My rebus is a very famous two-man sketch from a stage-show that was first performed, as far as I can make out, in 1960.
The sketch is in the form of an audition. The applicant is very enthusiastic, but there is a slight problem....

four words - 3/3/3/3
