Hi Pin,

I've had a day of cleaning out the detritus that one collects over the years with a view of making an eventual move as simple as possible.

Some of it is not rubbish but is no longer something we will use.  As an example, I bought a reasonably expensive  digital camera for our trip overseas in 2004 - a huge brute of a thing - which presumably would still take good pictures but not nearly of the same quality as my iPhone.   it has been sitting idle in a cupboard for over ten years because it is too good to throw out.  We bought a neat little camera for our 2010 trip - same story. Well out they go.

The new paradigm is that anything that hasn't been used for 5 years, and hasn't been missed, doesn't go north and that includes hundreds of books,

Chips, pies and beer is more their sort of thing!  :-H

Linda, if that’s the case, I might be a closet Traveller.  :D

Surely not, Jack!  You definitely look more like a mint cake man to me.  I'm going to Kendal on Saturday - won't be touching the mint cake though, got an appointment at the dentist's soon - oh joy! - v. expensive, v. traumatic!!  >:D

Not really mint cake sort of people, Jack!  Chips, pies and beer is more their sort of thing!  :-H

Oh Linda we're scarily alike   I love chips & pies :-H  I like beer too but wine involves less trips to the loo

Good luck at the dentist. Hope it's not too painful & costly. Just console yourself with the thought that had you been scoffing mint cake all these years you probably wouldn't have any teeth left to take to the dentist!

Hi Jack

I don't envy you that job one little bit :(  The problem is you keep stuff partly because one day it'll come in useful & sometimes because it has sentimental value.  Do you have charity shops there?  Can you donate unwanted stuff to good causes?

I've had a days holiday today so no work for me until Monday :)  I had lunch with my 2 friends who are happily retired.  The forecast for the weekend is pretty grim :(  Another storm - Dennis the Menace this time.  Howling gale & wall to wall rain.  Not a cheery prospect!

Loved the cartoons - especially the golf one

Off to the kitchen to see

You definitely look more like a mint cake man to me.

I do like beer, pies and chips but I might also like Kendal Mint Cakes.  I wouldn't know because until I googled them a little while ago, the only thing I knew about them was from a conversation in January last year in this thread between Pen, Christine and Mike.  Mike thought they were Heaven on Earth and Pen and Christine thought they were  too sweet.

My recent research shows they are an energy bar made with pure and natural ingredients and Quiggins have been making this product since the 1880's.  Famous as an energy bar, Kendal Mint Cake has been used on numerous expeditions by explorers, hikers, bikers and anybody needing an energy boost!

I guess Pen and Christine are not explorers or hikers but hey, we all need an energy boost.  I can order them online and get them delivered for $4.50 a bar, should I wish, from a shop in Sydney which specialises in English sweets.

I hope the visit to the dentist goes better than you expect and the trauma and the expense is minimal.
Regards, Jack

I have fond memories of Kendal mint cake from my childhood. If I remember correctly, it used to come in rectangular tins, rather like the traditional chocolate box shape, but made of thin, silver-coloured metal. I concur with Mike that it was delicious (although perhaps my taste has developed somewhat in the last 60 years, and I might not find it quite as appealing now).

OMG Jack. We've been in our house since October 1976....!!!

Hi Moyra

We lived in our first house from 1965 until 1993 when I was transferred to Melbourne.  We didn't rent our place but left It to be used by our kids (young adults) as they required between their temporary residences, so we only took basic furniture to Melbourne to live in rented premises and supplemented it as needed and then on to Sydney and added a bit more.  When we decided not to return to Canberra we told the kids to take what they needed, sell what of the remainder they could, and ditch the rest except for anything of sentimental value which they could keep for us.  So, this was achieved with no effort from us.

But there was a silver lining to today’s clean-up here.  I was for many years a member of Brokenwood’s Single Vintage Club.   Every Christmas they would send out a modest Christmas present.  One year the present was a small bottle of 2007 Shiraz from the paddock near their premium Shiraz which I quickly stored and forgot about.  This morning in the clean-up I found it and we had it for afternoon tea – bloody marvelous >:D.

Christine has been known to go hiking up hill and down dale but never felt the need for Mint Cake! My older brother used to live in Scotland and took me up various mountains and his preferred energy source was a chocolate digestive biscuit or two. Much nicer!
Today my walking is generally on footpaths around the various Lakes with an especial favourite being the walk around Derwentwater. A recently opened cafe in a walled garden provides lunch and then it's a case of how far around the lake we want to go that day. We may turn around and walk back (thus being forced to use the cafe for coffee and cake!) or we may use the ferry to return to Keswick and then  motoring back to Kendal with a tired but very wet spaniel in the back.
Quiggins by the way are not the only Mint Cake maker. There is also Romney's which is made 2 minutes walk from my home. Perhaps you may find Kendal Mint Cake Liqueur to your liking? It may be better for the teeth? I assume it is a variation on Creme de Menthe. Again not my sort of tipple.

Cooee Mr Shifter!

Do You Know The Piano's On My Foot?

I've no idea why this popped into my head Jack   The thought of you sorting through all your stuff perhaps!  I hope you're a bit less knacked by now.

I think you surpassed me with your cartoons   Most excellent.  The middle one especially tickled me!

As you rightly say I'm no explorer or hiker >:D  A sedate walk is more my style!  & you're also right about Kendal Mint Cake.  Far too sweet for my taste.

Here's a small random assortment for your amusement

There's some bangers in the fridge with my name on :-H

Take care

Sounds perfect Christine.  A walk round Derwentwater with lunch & tea & cake at a cafe or a ferry up to Keswick.  How very lucky you & Linda are to live in such a beautiful part of the World :)
I don't fancy the Kendal Mint Cake Liqueur any more than the mint cake itself I'm afraid.  Not my tipple either!

Hi Linda

As Jack said earlier I do hope your trip to the dentist wasn't too awful & not as dear & traumatic as you were expecting.
