edam
« on: June 21, 2007, 02:07:40 AM »
I know I haven't been around the forum for a while ... and I have a hell heck of a nerve popping in just to suggest a new word  :-\, but I was quite surprised that edam was rejected today.

Edam - Mild yellow Dutch cheese made in balls encased in a red covering  :-H

I hope everyone is keeping well, and I will try and pop in from time to time ... summer is just sooooo busy when you have three little ones ... I know ... lame excuse ... Chi should obviously take priority, but I just can't seem to convice my wife and kids of that!  ;D

When I was setting up Chi, I compared the list of four-letter words I had compiled for Letterbox with the much more inclusive YAWL. I think Edam was about the only word in my list that wasn't in Yawl. On closer investigation, I concluded that the word is always written with a capital E, in recognition of the town it's named after, so it doesn't qualify. The same applies to Gouda.

Always?  That's a dangerous word . . .

It appears that the wordnet online dictionary, from Princeton University, does not capitalize this word.  It is true that most dictionaries do capitalize this word, but not all.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/edam

The one to which I refer is the fourth on the list.

Ah yes, a non-amos, but the WordNet Dictionary never uses capitals for anything. See for example its entry for your home state in http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/virginia.

That is very odd.  I did not know that.  Thanks!
