I also was astonished that
blogger wasn't allowed. How can such a widely used word not be recognised? I mean, where have these people been - have they been living in a cave or something? Oh, what's the point in complaining - nobody ever listens.
But then I thought, wait a minute, this word list was created more than ten years ago, using a list that had been compiled a few years previously, based on the contents of dictionaries published a few years before that. And that original list, reflecting late 20th century English, has only been added to by me, when people send in suggestions. So it's actually not so surprising that
blogger isn't known. It would be surprising if it
was accepted, given that nobody has ever suggested it until now. (And it would be surprising if it had been suggested earlier, since the BOOTLEGGER puzzle last week was the first opportunity in a daily puzzle to try the word.)
Actually, the base word
blog and its inflected forms
blogged and
blogging are among the very rare exceptions to my claim that words are added to our list only following suggestions sent in by players. So obvious was it that
blog should be allowed that I added it in December 2005, when Chihuahua was only a few months old, before the forum existed, without, as far as I can recall, anyone suggesting it. The event was reported on the News page under the heading
Even More Words Needed?. (Little did I know just how many more words would be thought to be needed over the succeeding decade.)
Then, in 2009, I
accepted a suggestion that
blog should be made a common word and at the same time added
blogged and
blogging as playable words.
Anyhow, getting back to the issue at hand, I agree that
blogger should be accepted. I'll add it as a common word.
