status of newbie
« on: March 06, 2007, 02:40:34 PM »
O great administrator:

I realize no one but you are entitled to that appellation of elevation, but will it ever be possible to graduate from being a newbie? Not that oldie would be such a great name, but perhaps there could be gradations to, say, apprentice, wordsmith, and then on to master literati.

Just for fun.

Actually, you'll notice that under my exalted title of Administrator, I too am listed as a newbie.

On looking into the way the system operates, I see that by default a member advances from Newbie to "Jr. Member" after posting 50 messages, and subsequently passes through "Full Member" and "Sr Member" to eventually attain the pinnacle of "Hero Member" after pounding out 500 messages.

However, this can be changed. Some more lexical-related titles, as you suggest, would probably be better. And maybe the thresholds could be a bit lower - at this rate it'll be a long, long time before anyone gets to the top of the tree.

I've revamped the titles as follows:

Neophyte (Fewer than 50 posts - that's everyone so far)
Logologist (50 - 99)
Lexicomane (100 - 149)
Word-meister (150-199)
Linguissimo (200 or more)

Feel free to suggest alternative titles. Or additional ones - we can have more than 5 levels if we want.

Yes, but that doesn't mean I'll be posting messages purely in order to boost my count.

HI,
Well this is my first time...so be gentle with me...  :-[
I suppose i am a real 'newbie' and proud of it.
I have had fun reading all the messages and ideas, and maybe i might come up with a few [although i doubt it, actually].
It's great to see where everyone comes from, i have always wondered where the competion was?
it would be brilliant to hear back from someone...anyone.....
Keep up the good work. ;)

Technomc, whenever I see your Chihuahua profile, and that you live in Weymouth, it brings back memories of Thomas Hardy. The editions of his novels that we used in school had a map of Wessex in the front with the places labelled with their real names as well as Hardy's names.

Hi anonsi and Alan,
i just read your replies and i am sorry i didn't reply sooner..i've been too busy reading and playing...

For your info;
Thomas Hardy lived 8 miles away from my house in a charming thatched cottage that is open to visitors. All his locations were local to me and i have visited most of them for various projects i have worked on.
If you ever watch the film 'Far from the madding crowd' it was filmed in Weymouth and my step-dad was an extra in it.
My daughters' Godfather was in the most recent version of 'Tess of the D'urbevilles'. [Check out his website ; www.davidrandall.net
2 Thomas Hardy's are celebrated in Weymouth, the author and 'the kiss me Hardy' Hardy. He has a huge memorial at Hardy's Monument.
In fact quite a few famous people lived/live around here including Lawrence of Arabia, and the author Minette Walters, who also uses local places in her novels, which are very good i might add. The French Lieutenants  Woman was filmed at Lyme Regis on the Cobb, with Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.

Here endeth todays literature lesson..
To anonsi..thank you for changing your details, i do like knowing where players come from, we are quite an international band of players aren't we?

Regards to all,
Technomc  :D

T will miss the forum as much as we will miss her. But, be forewarned, she'll probably find a way to sneak in (perhaps from a remote location, friend's house, the library or other means) at least once or twice.

And once her problem has been remedied, WATCH OUT! She'll be EVERYWHERE!  ;D

Cheers -
we'll be watching!

She's just lulling us into a false sense of security!  By the way, 3B, I read somewhere in the Forum that you had got hold of a Barbara Pym book .. which one?  Hope you enjoy it, they tend to be very English and of another era!

Linda, I don't remember that I said that, although it has me interested in her now.

(I did a search of the forum, and it seems like Viz and you discussed that)

What does Pym write? Mystery? Romance?

I'm sure I could find her somewhere at a bookstore or library.

Cheers,  :D

Sorry, 3B, must have got you mixed up with Viz ... I am trying to mark students' work while sneaking a look on the Forum hence the mix up!  She writes light, easy reading novels - fairly romantic but not slushy ... check her out!
