Adding Ozlip words to word list?
« on: June 14, 2007, 10:20:39 PM »
Alan, I know this would probably be a lot of work for you, but sometimes it's just a bit more jumping around than I can handle, searching thru the Ozlip word list during the game for any last ones I might have missed (ref: "darl" that I once so stupidly missed because I forgot it). Many of those words are all everyday usage to you guys, but here, we don't say "onya" as a rule.

Could you add them to your ongoing list? If it's too much, I'll understand. (I guess I'm just being too lazy.)

Whatever you do, is fine.

Cheers,

I'd love to oblige, Threeb, but I'm not clear about what you're suggesting. When you say "ongoing list", do you mean the list of new words at http://chi.lexigame.com/news/newwords.html?

If you can do it, that's Exactly, what I meant Alan! You telepath, you!
Unless it would be easier to do it differently, or better!

Thanks, and onya!

I think I see what you're after, Threeb. But there are a few complications. Not all the Ozlip words are allowed in Chihuahua. And some of the Ozlip words that are in the Chi list have non-Australian meanings as well as Australian ones.

In any case, I think what you need is a bit broader than just the Ozlip words that are allowed in Chi, since Ozlip doesn't have any words longer than 4 letters, and there are quite a few longer words that are unknown outside Australia (and perhaps New Zealand) that are permitted in Chihuahua.

Having said that, it's probably true that the four-letter words come up much more frequently than longer words. So I could put together a list of Australianisms allowed in Chi, starting with the four-letter ones, and building it up over time.

However, there would probably be issues arising, about which words should be included, where a word that has a common meaning in Australia also has a relatively rare meaning in international English. For example, burl in Australia means an attempt - "I'll give it a burl." But it also means a knot on a tree, or a lump in cloth. Should we put burl in a list of Australian words?

So, the idea probably needs a bit more thought.

Oh, I see, said the blind woman!

Well, I think you've hashed most of it out. Perhaps, since the Oz list is nearly purely Aussie, most of those words would be rare to the rest of us so-called international "English-speakers." So just leave out the ones that are common to both usages (like burl), since they'd be accounted for anyway.

Sorry about the trouble. But, you actually seem to be enjoying the analysis anyway, so I don't really feel guilty. ;D

Cheers,
3-B
