krona vs rial
« on: March 22, 2014, 03:40:02 PM »
Standard puzzle March 21st. 'Krona' is allowed as a common word whereas 'rial' is supposedly rare. How come? As krona is the currency of 9.5 million Swedes the rial is the currency of countless more millions in many Arabic speaking nations. Also, 'krone' is not listed in ninja.

Which spelling(s) should be allowed, Tom? The Saudi Riyal has a 'y' in the middle, the Omani Rial doesn't. There is also a Ryal, but I can't remember where that's used. And the Cambodian Riel is spelled with an 'e'. All derivatives of the old Spanish 'real' I believe.

I wouldn't worry too much about a word not being in Ninja; All reliable dictionaries include both forms. Whether they should be common is another matter.

The Krona is Swedish, but the Krone is Danish and Norwegian. I wonder if the various plurals, 'kroner', 'kronor' and 'kronur' are also allowed in Chi?
