Local times
« on: June 19, 2013, 04:03:48 AM »
In an idle moment I was trying to see whereabouts in the world some of the forum members who haven't stated a location might be (yes, I know, I know). Then I looked at some who have provided one and there seems to be a discrepancy.

My time in the UK was showing as June 18, 2013, 06:51 PM
Birdy (New York) was showing as June 18, 2013, 01:51 PM
Bobbi in New Zealand was June 19, 2013, 05:51 AM

but...

TRex, near Chicago, was June 19, 2013, 03:51 AM!

What are the local times based on?

Since TRex is near Chicago, he should be in Central Daylight Time.  His time would be 12:51PM, June 18, 2013.

In case TRex is very far west of Chicago, and lives in Mountain Daylight Time, then his time would be 11:51PM, June 18, 2013.

I am in the Eastern Daylight time zone, the same as Birdy.

It's possible that TRex has not adjusted the parameter which places him in the correct time zone.

Pat, anyone who hasn't set the time offset on their user profile is shown as living in the time zone of the server hosting the forum. The server is in Sydney, which is 9 hours ahead of British Summer Time.

(Or, possibly, TRex has moved from the Chicago area to eastern Australia and hasn't gotten around to updating his location.)

My apologies for the kerfuffle. I had not bothered to set the time — I didn't think anyone would be looking at my time!

The autodetect function for the time did not work, but I think I was able to make the change manually. Does it look better now, Pat??

Hello, smiley with the long beard. No need to apologize - there's no requirement to set your time! I was just curious as to how it came to be.

It looks as if you're actually in America now.  :-*
